Howdy,

I've been playing IG for a few years and recently started getting interested in a 2nd army to spice things up a bit.

I was thinking of trying a marine army but wanted to get some opinions... ultra marines, blood angels or grey knights? I have only personally played against space wolves so dont have any first hand experience against any of them so was hoping for some opinions.

Lots of vehicles and such going on with my IG, very shooty shooty (surprise surprise). Id like to try an army that can take a bit more of a punch and is more infantry based (less mech) maybe with some dreadnaughts thrown into the mix because they're awesome. Id like to try something more well rounded and less glass cannonish.

Anyways, I will be searching for articles and borrowing the codexes to read but wanted to throw this out there in case anybody had any opinions.

Thanks.

How about CSM? A second Imperium faction might not be as much fun. Could also look at the Tyrant Legion or Renegade Guard in the Imperial Armour books (5 6 7 9 iirc) as a ghetto third army after picking up some C/SM's.

I say dark angels. Deathwing force is very much that, and dirt cheep to get a good basic force thanks to ebay and aobr. From there you can add other squads on as you go.

The Emperor doesn't have a GKs unshakable faith in the Emperor which is....basically himself?

Space Wolves aren't a new Codex anymore, and if power creep existed then how come SWs are still so strong?

I'd go BA or GK. Like BA more though; GK is like Vatican's army.

Depends wheter you are a casual or competitive.

For competettive either SW or GK is a good choice, good spammy net lists. (don't ask me i hate them)

For casual i would reccomend a bit out of the box thinking, there are really nice fluffy chapters about like:
Black Templars have a cool zealous crusade theme and are plain awesome IMHO plus 50 point and your army gets preferred enemy agianst them ALL yes please.
Dark angels are cool have this nice dark faithful feeling that makes them awesome and either raven or deathwing's gonna be awesome.
Ulltramarines have a cool rigid and roman feel you could also make a diffrent companmy with diffrent feel and iconography.
Space Wolves are cool but you should make a somewhat fluffy list to prevent all thecheesecallers from accusing you.
Same can be said of GK, personally i dislike the BA for some of the fluff ridicules but furthermore it's fine.

I am definitely casual. In California i played a few games a month, sometimes once a week or so, with a group of folks and my brother. I have since moved to eastern Iowa and dont know anybody out here who plays... my brother is moving this way though which is one of the reasons I am getting more into it again.

He is the space wolf player.

I just finished glancing through the ultramarines and grey knights codexes. I like a lot of the characters and units I am reading about.

I will say I am having a hard time reorienting my thinking. When I read about a badass space marine captain or whatever I cant help but thinking "he doesnt have eternal warrior, I can one shot this dude with my vendetta" stuff like that. Its hard for me to shift myself to the perspective of others, namely, most armies arent going to have a large amount of high strength weaponry to throw down the field like guard do.

Ive read (and played against) CSM... I didnt care for their selections too much, I am going to pass on that one.

Maybe I am short changing myself not looking at the other armies... BT and DA are old eh? Thats my only hesitation there. I should take a look at xenos too i guess...

Will I ever find my Marbo in another army? haha.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

If by DA you mean Dark Eldar, then no, they received a brand new codex last year along with a completely new set of miniatures. Their reboot is quite fantastic I have to say. However, they're a difficult army to play, still highly capable with a large and varied selection of models and builds, likely the most balanced codex this edition, ad they're THE glass cannon army.

I've seen so many DE players everywhere, I'm tired of seeing them, to be honest.

If you want Space Marines, I'd go vanilla, and then make up your own chapter. It's a lot more rewarding to have your own colors and fluff, makes you care much more about your army.

The thing about it is, you can't rely on Dakka to tell you what army to play. You have to decide what to play yourself, based on what fluff you like. for example, I'm going to tell you to play CSM or Necrons, because those are the armies I love.

You have to choose for yourself, nobody can tell you what army to play.

Of course I will choose for myself Spider.

And I want you to tell me to play CSM or necrons, not because I am looking to be swayed, but because I am looking for other people's opinions.

Then I agree, a very old codex that I wouldn't recommend, not even to the fans of the army since it's so hollow and boring. Deathwing is the only redeeming factor.

Dark Eldar though, I highly recommend them, even if they do take a bit of practice. There's certainly not that many Dark Eldar players. The latest Nova figures showed that at least for tournaments numbers aren't high. There were only five IIRC.

Dark Angels would be my vote. After playing IG for so long, you might find Deathwing to be a refreshing change of pace, since it is very different from what you're used to playing.

Well in that case, Necrons. You mentioned you wanted an army that can take a hit, and Necrons are just that. Just watch any other army try and take a S10 AP1 hit and shrug it off. Add to that one of the best CC units in game, and the best tanks in 40k, and you are left with a very nice army that is more than capable of competing with the big dogs if you play it right.

Necrons were my first army, and while I have since played every army in 40k, they have remained my favorite. They are easy to paint, easy to learn, and have amazing fluff.

On another note, you said you didn't like CSM. Why not?

Its been a couple years since I read the codex so I dont really remember. I just dont remember seeing a lot of units that interested me.

That being said, at the time i wasnt interested in marines either so maybe i should take another look.

Necrons are getting redone soon arent they? Seems like a bad time to be purchasing potentially older models, eh?

Yes and no. There's a substantial risk that their models will become more expensive when the new 'dex hits the shelves. On the other hand, you might buy lots of stuff that turns out to be complete crap.

Go for Black Templars IMO. Once you go Black, you never go ba.. IS THAT A PSYKER? KILL! BURN! CLEANSE!

It's probably a safe bet buying Warriors. Immortals as well, and Monoliths, but I'd hold off on anything else, as you don't know what GW is going to do to the rest of the units.

True, Warriors are pretty much perfect the way they are, so I doubt they're being upgraded.

Immortals seems like a bad idea, since they're metal, and therefore expensive and hard to paint. I'd expect a plastic Immortals box in a Necron rerelease, so getting some now seems like a waste of money; at least wait and see.

Warriors and Monoliths definitely still seem good, since they're fine the way they are (Other than the Warriors' universal squatting pose).
