Hi Dakka!

So, I just rented Resistence 3, and in the time between it updating and me being able to play it I thought I would share my frustrations with you all...

WHY cant video game companies like Sony etc just make a game that you can play out of the box?! Why when I bought GT5 did I have to wait 45 minutes for the fething thing to update and install before I could even press a button? And its the same for every game, WHY when I rented Space Marine was there an update?! It had been available for less than 24 hours! What was there to update for the love of god?

Im sure there is a logical explanation, but for 's sake, if a game spends years being developed why does it not just work? Updates are fine, after say, 6 months of release when they can check the feedback from gamers and then fix the problems that occur. Even if those problems just should not be there.......

Short answer: Because they like to make money.

Long answer: Today's games are extremely complex, and though the companies do uncounted (figuratively, not literally-- although I'm sure testers do put in uncounted overtime in many projects) hours of testing, they do not have time to get EVERY bug fixed because they do not have limitless amounts of money. They fix as much as they can, especially major bugs, but when the producer says it's time for a game to go gold... it's time for the game to go gold. Game development is not cheap, so producers try to give them lots of time... but the game needs to be released so that everyone can get paid. So that they can eat, and have air conditioning/heating, and feed and clothe their children, afford gas, etc.

Also, there are plenty of bugs that just won´t become apparant untill the masses get their hands on it.

Hell, some bugs get caused by the masses themselves, only showing up with x amount of people doing something.

Well, I admit that 45 minute long updates do any the living daylights out of me, but as Melissia and Soladrin so aptly stated, somethings just can't be spotted or fixed before the game goes out.

However, this leads me to wonder, why do you always need to make an update or other when first playing the game? Especially if the game is brand new like SM? Did they spot bugs that needed such big updates in the space of a couple days?

I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

On the PS3 they released a few big updates--notably some finesseing the netcode making it easier for people to get into games.

I miss the MegaDrive and the SNES..... The days were you could get home, insert cartridge and be playing in less time than a ps3 takes to warm up!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yeah, I would also like to add that the Resistance 3 update was a huge 678mb......

And yet, there was no patching, so the buggy games were ludicrously buggy.

People are looking at the NES/SNES/Genesis days with rose-tinted glasses-- the games back then? Yeah, also buggy as hell.

Yeah, and much easier on the graphics cards.

But not often easier on the eyes unless they were made before the 3D craze.

I mean honestly, FF7? Hideous. Even its CGI can't really be described as anything but amateur these days.

You either put up with updates or you put up with bugs. I know which I prefer.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

Kind of what I was alluding to, certain games use 3D modeling for the background as well as everything else in game too. Then there are games like Halo that pixelate the models until they reach a certain distance.

Seems like a fairly easy thing to put up with in favour of having a game that works well...
I mean i remember playing PS1 games that were annoyingly buggy.
