I got a hankerin' for a mildly fluffy C:SM list and picked up the commander and command squad boxes. Kitting out the command squad has been a painfully hard decision, and I've read a half dozen threads about it, and the consensus is plasma guns for all four vets. That sounds a little boring to both play an model. So how about this?

Cap'n with Relic blade, storm bolter and Arty armor. - 148pts

Command squad with
-Apothecary
- 2x Plas Pistol Lightning claw
- 2x Plas Pistol Power weapon

The idea is to take a razorback along with a full tact squad, leave the tact squad on an objective and roll the cap'n and command squad out in the razorback. I'd like to use this squad to kill terminators, FNP nob squads, and that sort of thing. Is this an effective use of points? Is there a different choice in the codex that fills the same role more efficiently?

I really don't want to put the squad on bikes. That's expensive and I'm not sure I enjoy bikes all that much. To be fair, I haven't played a bike army though.

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

So space marines can not do cc but in general need one squad to do the cc work. Usually assault terminators do this role well.

The assault termies will make it where they are needed by using a landraider or having a 3++.

The only way to get your squad into cc where you need it is by giving bikes. In which case, yes this works well.

Not sure I have made self clear .

If you want your command squad and capt to be cc heavy, give them bikes. Not only on bikes do they move further and have a TWL bolter, but add one to their toughness, making them better against horde armies so instead of a 5 to hurt you, they need a 6. And if you are going the path of bikes, and want to do a bike army, then Jaghatai Khan is a great choice for an HQ simply because he can make bike squads Troops.

Having them in a Razorback, on the other hand, isn't really a good idea. Sure you get a AV 11 vehicle with a TWL weapon but this means they have to ride up to their target, get out, wait a turn, then assault. So while they wait, your opponent is going to shoot everything AP 3 and lower at them and usually kill them.

Hopes this helps

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

Obliterators: They've got a gun for that.

That's very helpful because I had forgotten about the razorback not being an assault vehicle.

I do have a squad of assault termies in land raider in just about all my lists. I'm partly trying to find a niche for a command squad to fill, and anti-heavy infantry seemed a good shot with easy plasma and power weapons.

I guess 4 plasma guns in what is mostly a gun line list isn't a bad idea with a razorback. Certainly much safter giving them plasma guns than anyone else.

Fwiw ANY captain on a bike unlocks bikes as troops.

This is correct. Khan just turns combat tactics into outflank.

And OP, you shouldn't take that squad to the dance with assault termies or nobz. Your guys have no invul so risk getting fully pasted against hammertermies if they make their saves alright, and they can't ID nobz so same thing there really. Regular terminators maybe.

By the way, PW and LC cost the same, there's no good reason to take power weapons.

Be funny about it.

Give them all dual thunderhammers and a storm shield on bikes.

Yes, that is funny. Make them even more expensive but so much more likely to be alive.
