Hey this may sound like a silly question, but can you use the 'Armoured Battlegroup' List in normal 40K games? If so, is it with or without your opponent's permission? I'd really love some help on this, thanks.

Yes, though it depends on who you're playing for the permission thing.

That's the armoured battlegroup list from Imperial Armour Volume 1 kind of thing, the forgeworld book. in case that wasn't clear.

No, you will more often than not find that you wont be able to use the Armoured Battlegroup list anywhere (without player consent).

Imperial Armour, in which the Armoured Battlegroup appears, is an expansion like Spearhead, Cities of Death, Planetstrike and Apocalypse. Would you expect to play any of these without prior arrangement?

Well don't let what others say discourage you from building one, you can always incorporate the tanks into a regular IG army.

Also, if you're looking for a random game, you can always ask nicely. Most of the time when I'm playing a random game down a GW or a gaming club, people either don't mind or want to play against the shiny new list, so while you should mention that you are playing an unorthodox list, most people will be more than happy to play against it.

(Unless you're in a known anti-forgeworld area?)

The only real issue with Forgeworld in random games is surprising your opponent - let them check out the book and army list for half an hour before the game. Most intelligent people will end up playing you once they realize that Forgeworld lists aren't as overpowered as they assume them to be.

a lot of tournaments in brisbane at least allow IA rules.

It's not too hard to get a good player to accept to use Imperial armour rules, as long as you give them a while to read them, since IA rules are a great way to mix up your games.
