Just starting and fiqured a 500 point army would be a good place to start and learn the ropes before I upgrade to 1500 and get more competative. So far I am thinkin of starting out with grey knights. How good are they and what would you recomend as a good 500 poin list? Also how hard would it be to upgrade that list to a 1500 point list? I'm pretty sure I wanna go with GK for my 500 point army and then maybe switch to SW when I start playing 1500 and up.

If you want to start out as grey knights, a good MEQ force, then by all means do so.

Two units of terminators and a simple HQ, maybe an inquisitor for cheapness and you have a good 500 point force.

Adding to that to make a 1500 point is easy or hard, depending on what you want to do.

For example, my 1500 point idea for grey knights is as follows:

Grand master
5 man terminators with a psycannon
5 man terminators with a psycannon
1 dreadknight with 2 weapons added and personal teleporter
1 dreadknight with 2 weapons added and personal teleporter
1 dreadknight with 2 weapons added and personal teleporter
one or two other things, I forget what

Easy, simple, effective and low model count. Just build on to the army with what you want.

However if you want to start off with a 500 point GK army and then go space wolves, my question is why? Just do a 500 point space wolves army then, you won't have to buy another codex that way.

Yeah, go with Space Wolves instead of Grey Knights if you plan on playing Wolves instead later on. MEQ armies are very beginner friendly as they have solid stats and rules meaning that you won't be worrying about them being shot up or running away all the time like some other armies.

I'm thinking I may just go with 1500 grey knight terminator spam to start.

That can work well, just make sure you deal with all the variables when you make the list. If you can't kill hordes or tanks well, you will probably lose often.

1 Grey Knight Terminator Squad @ 450 pts

I would follow that as an idea, but if your deadset on running squads of 10 termies, make sure you add that banner to each squad for +1 attack. If you plan to combat squad them instead, then don't.

I would suggest somehow having two demonhammers in each squad however, or fitting in something ranged for anti-tank.

Yeah I'm going to read through the codex and see all the options available.

You can have an army of 5 walkers under 500 pts, all carrting heavy weapons Not necessarily the best list, but hilarious..

Least is Necrons. 2 10 man squads and an underequipped lord.

*edit* The GK lists above are solid, if you insist on playing hoomies..
