While I have seen some beautiful conversions based on the Carnifex, it's just plain wrong. The codex describes this beastie as "massive" and the Carnifex just doesn't have that feel any more. The Hive Fleet has has gotten larger in recent years on a per model basis. Once upon a time the Carny was easily the most massive critter in the army but today they're clearly only a "big bruiser".
The better argument as to why this frame is too small is to look at what it's supposed to do. Basically it's a transport regardless of whether it's called that or not. 3d6 termagants every turn for on the average 4-5 of 6 turns. 3d6 averages 12-14 so we're looking at a frame that can carry a minimum of 48 termagants in game terms. Using the Carny as a base really is akin to a clown car. This is far worse that the original Rhino holding 10 marines - far worse. One of the guys in my group uses a Hierodule as a proxy as it's far closer to the proper size.
Frankly the options for larger models that can be used are to build a proper Tervigon are few and far between. Probably the best readily available starting point without a ton of greenstuff work is the Warhammer goblins aracnarock (sp?) abdomen with Carny or Trygon torso, head, and claws. There are a couple of them here on Dakka - just do a search.
Using anything smaller is either modeling for advantage, which even GW says is wrong(I've seen far too many threads with comments to the effect that using anything larger than a Carny makes a creature that's too big a target for gaming), or laziness once you know that the Carny conversion is far too small("I know it should be bigger but there isn't a bigger kit and I can't sculpt"). I look forward to seeing what you go with.
