So, in a fit of genious, my friend and i have decided to trade codexes and do battle against each other with our opponents army. Normally I play Chaos Marines, but today, i'll be playing Imperial Guard against my own army. It's a 2000 pt game and pretty much any unit is at my disposal. What tips do the guard players have that will help me defeat my own Chaos Marines?

A couple of command squads in a chimera works well, spam special weapons of your choice with them. You can fit 5-6 vet squads in easy with meltas in chimeras for your troops. A psyker battle squad is typically a strong addition, less effective against chaos due their access to many fearless units but the blast is still tasty. Vendettas are the best fast attack option, best off filling the FA slot with the. Manticores are tasty with multiple s10 barrages (you can deploy them out of LOS and still get shots off) and a couple of squadroned hydras really helps against light av's and fast skimmers in particular (ie.Shrouded SR full of paladins).

Guard has no psychic defense anymore. So if you think you're going to face lash, I'd fully mech up. Blobs can be way too vulnerable to lash.

Lots of autocannons (Hydras would be best). Plenty of AV12 and less targets. Seriously, lots of autocannons. They're great against Daemon Princes too.

At least 2 Russes to thin the MEQs out.

Melta teams for heavy vehicle popping, Obliterators, etc. Plasma if you run out of meltas or expect to face plague marines.

Vendettas are always good.

Basically run the standard issue IG stuff and you should do fine. Just be aware that Guard has a pretty high difficulty of play for those not used to it. Fire priority, knowing how your orders work, etc.

UP has it about right. the key to fighting marines of any description is to kill their vehicles and take away their armour saves.

depending on the points and how much terrain is on the board, I would take normal Russ tanks and a Demolisher to take on LR's and Termies (yes, the executioner is better for killing teqs and MC's but it cant kill LR's). otherwise take Vets with 3 plasma guns for killing marrines or with 3 meltas to kill vehicles. put everything in vehicles if you can to counter lash, and generaly shoot stuff.

main issue with IG vs CSM is that your massive Blob squads can be lashed, never good.

if you have one handy, a vendetta or 3 arent a bad option if you fill them with nastieness, just remember that they are a transport with extra guns, not a skimmer-tank.

oh, yeah, make sure you move your vehicles every turn to prevent them getting insta-hit in cc.

"everything counts in large amounts ..... especialy Battle cannon rounds and deathstrike missiles"

opponent "hah! take a void bomb from my void raven!" ..... bomb misses, scatters 12" onto Archon in transport..... transport explodes killing Archon..... me "dude, i think that just voided your warranty"

Hardly. Against CSM, a well-placed parking lot is enough to win the day.

Forget the Manticores and Vendettas:
- Run Basilisks in addition to your Leman Russes for some solid anti-MEQ
- Run your Vet squads with a lascannon/x3 Sniper Rifles (you are not going to need a missile frag template, so I'd go for the las.)
- Keep your Chimeras with a multilaser (has a better chance than a heavy bolter to glance Rhino, and can pen)
- Your third heavy slot should be filled with hydras to provide a strong middle ground between anti-MEQ and anti-mech
- If you have extra points, run your vehicles with krak missiles. If you can de-mech most CSM forces, then it's just a shooting range.

There is nothing wrong with using Manticores or Vendettas, Manticore pops vehicles just as well here as anywhere and 1d3 S10 templates still make a mess out of anything, Vendettas are awesome for sniping Obliterators and DPs.
Another great tank to bring is Executioner, pretty darn good at killing just about everything Chaos usually brings.
Really whatever can kill other MEQ armies would work just as well here as anywhere.

Run your army how you like, of course. But some of the advice you're giving seems a bit... questionable. Different play-styles in different groups, no doubt.

yes, I managed to run my IG army quite well for years without manticore and vendetta. I'm sure other people can too.

Against marines just take the usual - melta and plasma. I'd suggest at 2000 pts, take some stormtrooper squads with plasmaguns and plasma pistol, and maybe Marbo if you have a spare slot (like, not taking the psyker battle squad). Marbo is hilarious, and can kill heaps of guys.

agree with kyranzor, match marbo up against an expensive squad of plague marines and watch him cry.
Medusas are fun as well, can take out a good swathe of enemy. And as has been said above, the executioner...with pask and plasma cannon sponsons...so much plasma...

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Yes, then for more plasma fun, run 9 armoured sentinels with plasmacannons. For the lulz of course.

A couple LRBT(squadron) always served me well vs MEQ, along side 3 vendettas and 2 Manticore
