Possibly a stupid question, but here it goes:

I have never actually used any kind of finish on my models. Now that my painting skills are reaching a level I like to call "don't suck as bad as it used to" I am wanting to protect my models. My only question is this: Do you coat them, and then add flock and whatnots to the base, or do you finish the base and cover that as well?

If you are using a flock or basing you will not paint. Varnish first. If you use water effects, mask them. If it's all painted varnish last.
