Very simple question here: why are grey knights called GREY knights?

Because their armour... Is grey?

Beyond that, I think it's a subversion of the "white knight paladin" archetype, in that while Grey Knights fit the paladin mold, to do what they do they also have to be completely ruthless and make some pretty brutal choices to do what they do. So they're not white knights, but grey, to fit the "grey" morality they have to impose upon themselves, I guess.

Because they are Grey.
I mean they are supposed to be... in the original fluff.

Thanks, and I always thought their armour was a boltgun metal/silver sort of colour.

Just a side note, despite GW studio artist's interpretations with the models, unpainted ceramite is supposedly more of a dulled greyish-silver.

Because their armor is Grey. Simple as that.

( note that also Blood Angels are Blood Red, Black Templars are almost all black and Ultramarines are painted in real Ultramarine color, witch is blue ).

The Emperor doesn't have a GKs unshakable faith in the Emperor which is....basically himself?

I guess because the darker metallic shade of their power armor, but if their armor was white,
It would almost be a reflection of their morality, and while they are pure, they have to make some brutal
decisions, and so grey is just overall a better choice

Grey is an equivilant color to silver in the color spectrum.

I don't paint like GW paints them now, I use the old method of just painting on straight boltgun metal(no drybrushing)

it has a greyish metallic tone so the name is suitable.

It also has to do with their role. They are the dividing line between the light and dark in the universe. a line of shining steel against the darkness. They inhabit the grey area between Good and Evil. hence "Grey Knights"

It's not the colour of their armour. Not the main reason any how. Their armour is the colour of unpainted Ceramite, metalic silver to represent their purity.
As Grey Templar has said, it's symbolic. They do whatever is necessary to protect the Imperium, that means killing few to save the many, sacrificing any servant or asset to defeat the Daemonic, and using powers thought forbidden to all others, Sorcery. Not purest white, not blackest evil, but grey.

Their armor was supposed to be unpainted and unmarked, and ceramite is a greyish color, hence Grey Knights. But blinged out silver looks cooler on the tabletop.

The whole, "use forbidden powers" is a new invention of the 5th edition codex. They were always staunch puritans, they only now became the biggest radicals of them all.

I wasn't really referring to using forbidden powers.

They will without hesitation have the population of a planet killed if they must.

Them becoming Radicals was indeed pretty lame.

Probably work

I don't know. I kind of like that they walk more of a blurred line, and can only do so because they're beyond corruption. It makes them a bit more grimdark. Besides, they were ALWAYS psykers. They haven't started doing anything they didn't always do. It's just that now it's "wield forbidden sorcery" rather than "oh, and these guys have holocaust and hammerhand".
