Was thinking about how to start a ravenguard army. Would most likely start at 1000 points with Shrike being the foreman. How should i buy my marines so i can save money? I'm thinking of using assault marines and most likely only two tact squads. Should i buy three tact squads and jump packs separately or just buy boxes of assault marines? I also need melta guns and powerfists. (meltas for tact squads and powerfists for both assault and tact squads).

40k is not a cheap hobby, and it's not going to get cheaper at the rate GW's going. If you're not willing to spend your money, you're better off with another tabletop game or hobby.

While this isn't a cheap hobby by any means, that doesn't mean that we can't be efficient and cost-effective in our purchasing. Hunting around on eBay or Warstore for significant discounts over GW prices can be a simple way to save a buck here and there. Good luck with your Marines, OP

If you're buying Rhinos (and it sounds like you're not), get Razorbacks.
You get the Rhino and the Razorback sprue, for the same price. There is only the Rhino in the battleforce box, though.

Ebay.
Getting AoBR models for your Tac squads also saves a ton of money ($12.00 compared to $30.00). Granted, you don't get as many bits or options, but that's where converting or buying individual bits comes into play.
I was able to get 3 Tac squads with the following configuration for $38.00:
Flamer, Missile Launcher, Combi Melta
Flamer, Missile Launcher, Plasma Pistol/Chainsword
Melta, Multi Melta, Combi Melta
Just bought some AoBR marines and converted or bought individual bits to complete.
You can do that same with Terminators. ( I have 2 Tac Termie squads that I spent a total of $30.00 on).
Biggest thing is patience when it comes to shopping on Ebay

If you have a girlfriend see if you can swap her for a fully painted army down your FLGS.
Very cost effective as you won't need to take her out for dinner or buy here flowers anymore either
win win scenario

Indeed. ^_^ It'll also remove your sex drive, because your now-ex-girlfriend will take great pleasure in removing delicate parts of your anatomy. ^_^

It's probably overkill for what you're looking to use, but if you can still find a dusty old Megaforce in an online shop somewhere, it's probably your best bet at buying marines cheaply.

Back when I made my first Assault Squad, I was chatting on the GW forums and someone suggested getting some sort of Space Wolves box alongside a bag of jump packs. I did so, and it worked very well. Unfortunately, since then I think they've altered the Space Wolves kits so they're not as plain, and instead have more Space Wolves-flavoured insignia and markings sculpted onto the pieces, so it may not be as viable an option if you can't remove the markings. Back then, it saved me probably about 10-15 dollars for my squad of 10. Nowadays it'd probably save roughly the same amount of money in parts, but cost you more in time spent removing insignia. That's not a huge issue for everyone, especially those who enjoy such endeavours.

As already posted, E-Bay is probably your best bet for getting stuff cheap especially if you know how to strip poorly painted minis. If you have a friend that is looking to start and has interest in Orks, then Assault on Black Reach box set is a pretty good way to go for both as you can split it.
Other than that, you are restricted to online sellers such as theWarStore.com or your FLGS for product.

I just bought 1 sm b-force, 1 sw b-force, 1 box of sw terminators and 2 rhino bits for 240 USD including shipping and all taxes. Took about a week to get to me. I was very satisfied with that price. With all the bits from the SW boxes I was easily able to "wolfify" the vanilla marines. Edit- I used dicebucket.com
