Hey guys,
A little back info. I've been playing warhammer 40k for a long time now. I like the game, but I'm falling out of touch with it. I believe its because of the armies I'm choosing. I recently had a huge grey knights army. I loved the models but hated playing them. I hate marines (found out the hard way). Now, I'm on a quest to find the right army for me, and I believe that its orks. I had orks once before, but traded them away thinking the grass is greener on the other side. Heh... greener than orks... stupid. Anyways... I know I played them incorrectly before, ans that could have been part of the problem.
Now, I've gravitated back towards my green little friends. I love numbers, mass vehicles and assaulting. Seems like orks would be the best fit.
Now for the big question. Are they competitive? Will I be able to win tournaments and spank players if I dedicate everything I have into learning and loving my orks? Do they have multiple competitive builds? I want to cram as many trukks and battlewagons into my list as possible without that 3 nob in a battlewagon cheese.
Or should I just accept that this is what 40kI has become? WAAC lists cheesing each other. No longer being able to win a competitive game with a fun list.
Help me dakkadakkaites, you're my only hope.

I'm an Ork player. We do have competitive builds. Kan Walls, Green Tide, Mechanized... Sounds like you want to go mechanized which uses 3-4 battlewagons maybe a trukk or 2 covered by a KFF Big Mek and either nobz, boyz or burnas in each wagon. Koptas and lootas compliment the list as well. They are mid tier competitive maybe just below the top 5. 40k is simple, therefore it allows 1-5 armies be extremely competitive. If you want skill to be a larger factor and more balanced armies look to fantasy. Orks can be good and in the end it's a dice game so luck helps a lot.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

My orks do well for me against just about everyone. I have won games against GK, BA, DE, Nids, and eldar on a regular basis. I like them because they can be competative without being cheesy, its just strenght in number for the most part. Most of the time it works, sometimes not. Even if you loose a game or two here and there you feel better about your self in the wins because you did not stoop to the level of the cheese. I like the green tide lists myself. My friends and me usually play 2000-3000 points and my orks usually run about 120-200 models depending on the size of the game. Lots of boys and a few specialitst like tankbustas, camandos, or storm boyz. You can never go wrong with more boyz, just get out the paint brush.

I think pretty much any army is competitive if you know what you're doing. I play Marines (badly) and understand the desire for something different. Orks are competitive, and I have seen multiple different builds for them that work. Just because a list is popular doesn't mean it's bad though. I would definitely look into some of the more common ork strategies to see what works for other people.
