It may not be a remake...but...it's obviously a "prequel"...
...I'll reserve judgement until I have a look...but..not expecting much..
...Damn, I've become far to cynical.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
This appears to be what happens at the Norwegian camp and therefore separate to Carpenter's classic, so not a remake, which I am cool with.
I think?
It looks like Thing II to me. Meh.

I dunno, 'The Thing' is one of my favourite films. If this is a prequel then it had better be good, though if it's about what happened at the Norwegian Campsite, how will it be any different?
Looks like it could be the same movie rehashed for 2011. If that's the case then it'll be one to avoid i feel....
Well it should end with two uninfected Norwegians and a wolf mimc.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Cause some scallywag what wit' thar big breeches and struttin' 'round da office be sayin' "We'se need some way ta make loot without offerin' a bounty for new work!" Then all they 'ave da to is keelhaul up a sunken idea from da past and parade it around what with da fancy CGI and effects that Hollywood has today.
The special effects that Rob Bottin did for the original Thing were just too awesome and too original. I have a hard time believing CGI will live up to his legacy.

Blasphemer. Thats not the original Thing. Desi Arnes was the original thing, and he was one badass killer carrot.

Some bits of that trailer made it look a lot like a remake: The dog chewing it's way out of the kennel, the microscope shot of the cells being taken over, even the some of the corridors looked damn similar to the 1986 version. Looks like the main difference is the addition of a girl in one of the lead roles - moar sexy is moar munnies......

I actually think The Thing still stands up on its own merits... Some of the effects like the head sprouting legs may look a tad comedic, but on the whole it still looks pretty good.
It's just a shame that the main protagonist is such an unrelatable 'bad boy' douche.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Not that this remake's standard gawp-mouthed 'Sindy' is any better. Hooray for vulnerability and screams!

Excepting, of course, the original short story. I just watched the Desi Arnes one a while back and I flippin' loved it. Beautiful, classic, damn fun sci-fi.

loved the 80's version, not sure about the new one but you never know. I got the idea though that they're kind of throwing away the old one, and not doing a prequel, but just making it that US folks found it in the ice the way the norwegians did and then just take it from there.

It is a prequel for sure. I have been following it for awhile to see how it was going to pan out. (huge fan of the 82 version) The only saving grace for me I think will be to see how a lot of the things shown at the Norwegian camp happened. The suicide victim that was frozen, the bloody axe stuck in the door. According to the director all of these questions will be answered.
Of course on the flip side, not knowing everything is intriguing in its own right.
This is a prequel. I remember reading a interview with the director or producer or someone important and he said that it is a prequel and the "The Thing" was just a working title, but when they couldnt think up a better name they decided to just leave it as the thing. I dont remember where it was i read it but i have a feeling it was IMDB. If i find it again il link it.
EDIT* - Ok i was wrong, it wasnt an interview. It was one of the trivia pieces...
The producers convinced Universal Studios to allow them to create a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing instead of a remake, as they felt Carpenter's film was already perfect, so making a remake would be like "painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa". However, the prequel still has the title of the original film, because they couldn't think of a subtitle (for example, "The Thing: Begins") that sounded good.

Why must they tamper with something that was, and still is, so great? I think one thing the original has going for it are the well done special effects. They didn't have CG or anything so they did what they could with what they had and it turned out amazing. This new one is just going to be people acting against things that don't exist. I hate CG sometimes.
I'll give it a shot. Is it an 18 rating? There are too many films now cutting down on the gore to get the kids in. Where are all the 15 films? There are hardly any, they are all 12A, for the kids.
The film is supposed to account for everything we see of the Norwegian base in the first film. And we know how it ends, I suppose. But it makes it hard to wonder how they will have and twists or surprises in it.
Did anyone ever play "the Thing" scenario for Necromunda?
I did once, it was ridiculous and killed someone's entire gang, in the end we decided to pretend the game never happened.

im a fan of the old one cause it wasn't CGI and had real special effect models. now everythings CGI and i dont like it as much.
this is obviously CGI, which will take away a huge part of why i liked the movie,so i doubt ill like it.
