I've been thinking about what kind of army I want to collect next and have come to the conclusion of a fun theme-ish list: Scout based army. Seeing as I do not yet own the codex for vanilla marines, I was hoping for some of the lovely, knowledge members of dakka to give me an idea of what would be considered "semi-competitive" ( enough to have the ability to win fun, casual games. )

What I was thinking was having a good mix of long range ( snipers + missile launchers ), medium range ( bolters ), and CC. I'm not really into the idea of having a transport for every single foot unit.

So in short, I was hoping someone could give me a general idea for a 750-1500 point Scout army.

Thanks.

Basically the 3 close combat squads are riding in the Land speeders, the other squads(maybe 2) take cover in a 2+ terrain courtesy of the techmarine and cloaks. preds support speeders, Sicarus is in there just because, although having LD 10 on scouts and rerolling to seize the initiative never hurt anyone. Could probably take a Librarian as a better HQ choice though.

I think some of the choices in the above list are sub-par, even for a scout list. Here's my suggestion for you to thinker with:

HQ

Librarian (Avenger, GoI)

Troops

5-man Scout squad, 3 sniper rifles, Telion, missile launcher - 135

5-man Scout squad, 4 sniper rifles, missile launcher, camo cloaks - 100

5-man scout squad, combi-melta, power fist - 110

5-man scout squad, combi-melta, power fist - 110

5-man scout squad, power weapon, meltabombs - 95 (goes into multi-melta LSS)

10-man Scout squad, Heavy Bolter (or Missile launcher), combi-flamer, power fist - 185

Fast Attack

Land Speeder Storm, heavy flamer - 60

Land Speeder Storm, heavy flamer - 60

Land Speeder Storm, multi-melta - 65

Heavy Support

Auto-Lascanon Predator - 120

Auto-Lascanon Predator - 120

Auto-Lascanon Predator - 120

Total: 1380

You still have 120 pts to play with. You can add another librarian and some gear here and there, or boost Telion's squad to 10 and still have 55 pts left. For a Scout list, I believe this is a solid core.

My two cents

Any thoughts on dropping predators for terminators or dreadnought? I think it kind of fits the army fluff wise, scouts go ahead and require immediate heavy support and termies, or dread, deep strikes in to support.

Again, I don't have access to a codex atm T_T, can Scouts themselves have homing beacons or is it the speeders.

I probably won't actually start on this army for a while, but my imagination is having a field day with it lol.

Thanks for your help.

Okay, so if you're looking for a fluff oriented list, here's an idea:

HQ

Librarian (GoI, Avenger), meltabombs - 105

Elite

5-man Sternguard squad, 5 combi-melta, Drop pod - 185

5-man Sternguard squad, 5 combi-melta, Drop pod - 185

Troops

5-man Scout squad, 3 sniper rifles, Telion, missile launcher - 135

5-man scout squad, combi-melta, power fist - 110

5-man scout squad, combi-melta, power fist - 110

5-man Scout squad, power weapon, meltabombs - 95

Fast Attack

Land Speeder Storm, heavy flamer - 60

Land Speeder Storm, heavy flamer - 60

Land Speeder Storm, multi-melta - 65

Heavy Support

5-man Devastator Squad, 4 missiles launcher, Drop pod, Locator Beacon - 195

5-man Devastator Squad, 4 missiles launcher, Drop pod, Locator Beacon - 195

TOTAL: 1500 PTS

The scouts are deployed first to identify priority targets for the main force to destroy. (that should fit your fluff)
Some of them are guiding the support units to adventageous position (Devastator deploy on the board)
Once the game start, you can drop the Sternguards if there is a good target for them or drop the empty pods and keep your Elite for later. Probably not the bets SM build out there, but it fits your theme I think.
