I have around 13000 points of Lord of the rings SBG models and im wondering if WOTR is worth playing? I have enough models to be able to play it. Basicall i want to know if they game mechanics are simple or complex, if the game is fluid or not and if, most importantly, it is fun to play!

Thanks

I personally think it is very fun to play... like a big battle version of LOTR. The only thing that would could some of the LOTR players out is that for WOTR you have to have a pretty large number of models, but if you've got 13000 pts for LOTR, then that shouldn't be a problem for you...

Skaven: 3000 pts
Daemons: 3000 pts
Lizardmen: 4000 pts
Rohan: 2000 pts
Retribution: 70 pts (1-2-1 so far)

Yeah I collected it when it first came out and uused to buy loads of it (well my parents foolishly got it all for me).

Is the game anything like WHFB?

Aye, it's a great system, very elegant. Not brilliantly balanced for high-level play, where certain armies and combinations tend to mop up, but is absolutely brilliant when played with people who don't use cheesy armies.

Another question why it's on my mind. Roughly how many movement trays will i need for 1000 points. Just a rough estimate? (I know its hard as armies will vary alot).

The problem with the game, as far as I can see, is that very few people play it compared to say 40k. Although I have a friend who is willing to play it with me (using my models as i have enough anyway haha)

Also, I noticed that models are cheaper than in BSG which means i probably have a much lower number than 13000 D:

Well, a 13,000 point army by WOTR scales would be terrifying to behold, so that's probably for the best

As you say, it could vary wildly. My current 1,500 point army, which is an infantry-heavy Gondorian force, is made up of 28 companies, meaning 28 WOTR movement trays (of which 4 are cavalry, 24 infantry). If I was running a goblin army it might well be larger; if I was running a Rohan, Dwarf or Elven army (or a cavalry/hero/artillery-heavy Gondor list) then it would likely be smaller. Absolutely depends on your forces.

And, of course, knocking 500 points off the list would diminish it considerably. By comparison, the 750-point list this expanded from used 15 trays (3 cavalry, 12 infantry).

Ha would be a cool sight though!

Hmm about the numbers I was thinking. Did you make yours or did you buy the GW ones?

I'd probably wont be running bigger than 500-750 points per side at first as I, and my friend, will need to get grips with the rules. But if you say roughly 15 for 750 ill have to double that as I'm the provider of all the models.

Have a nose round Ebay and see if there are any bundles of Movement trays going. You never know you might get lucky

Went through the rulebook today from a pdf i downloaded and the game is remarkably more simple than i thought it was going to be. Impressed.

I can't condone the use of a ripped PDF, but I'd agree with your assessment - it's a simple system, and benefits from that. I use GW's trays, as they're very convenient, and useful outside WOTR for transporting other round-based models.

I'm going to buy the rulebook as well but I just wanted to get a feel for the game first before I invest in anything. Ill probably use the GW trays as well just cause I'm too darn lazy to make my own

Cheers to this. Play with friends who aren't egotists and you will have an absolute blast. WoTR has been on heavy rotation in one of my game clubs for the last 5 months.
