So as it says in the title and if this is the wrong section mods please move it. I have for some reason began to become interested in the warhammer series and see what it was about. I don't have any idea other than checking out the Wikipedia article about it. So what can I learn about warhammer 40k or other warhammer games?

Well, there's also an introduction section, but this is ok I think. If you want to learn the game, one of the starter sets might be a good idea, though it could be a good idea to wait as there could be a sixth edition one coming out soon.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it. |

Dont wait....
Pick an army be impulsive and spent $$$ of ya hard earned cash on an army. Only to realise that GW as buffed everything else in the 40k universe except, your army, and left you to your fate of winning 1 battle in 10.
other than that I rcommend reading all of the fluff (Lore) and deciding on an army that best suits your personality. As mentioned a stater set is a good way to go, but not if your into converting models or having a "different" table top force.

Painting is also a plus. No one likes the Grey Horde and their Silver Kings.

Read army codex's and read lexicanum. Coolyo posted a link to that. if you're into reading you can check out the 40k Novels at your local book store there are some good ones.
What army do you intend to play?

I Do both. I started collecting Imperial Guard in 2003, than got Dawn of War the next year. I must warn you though, if you get in to the TT game than its gonna cost you some money, its not cheap and it just got more expensive(Luckily ive completed my army long ago)
But if you start with the Dawn of War games than you will probably just want to start the TT game even more.

I would suggest that you only get into 40k if you are actually interested in the hobbyist aspect of it. If you are into competitive gaming I would stick with PC games or maybe try Magic or something.
The game is fun though, and really flexible. However I don't think it would be worth it just to play the game without the cool looking miniatures or the opportunity to add one's creativity for it. What I am saying is that the rules don't stand on their own, the lore/fluff combined with the rules and the hobby aspects are what make 40k fun.

I suggest look at the top video on starting an army.
Oh and be prepared to spend money.
The THQ games are also decent. Space Marine was fun, and Dawn of War II was cool also.

Reading, lost and lost of reading.
IMHO once you are fimillar with the fluff the whole game and concept becomes alot more engaging.
As for table top vs videogames i'd say alot of people here do both.

Something no ones mentioned yet, find a gaming store/club near you and check out a few games, talk to some of the people(they'll generally help, especially since you're new to the hobby). As for TT vs video games, I play both(started TT then got into the video games, Space marine ftw even though i hate ultrasmurfs lol).

Get into the games if you want to check out the universe before diving in headfirst. The Dawn of War games are a great introduction to it all, and you can generally get them for cheap on Steam. Space Marine is great too, but it's new so you won't be able to get it so cheaply. Even as someone who isn't familiar with the universe, it's a very fun game.
Find a local game store if you can. Just Google "Games Workshop stores near ______" or what have you. They often have play areas and will have folks who can teach you about the game, and give you a demo!
