Great Knarlocs have two sets of rules.

The Great Knarloc Pack from 40kApoc and the Mounted Great Knarloc Herd from IA3.

Under the Tau Army List Rules Index, the Great Knarloc Pack is listed as a Formation. Does thin mean it can only be used, legally, in Apocalypse? I ask because as opposed to other Apocalypse only entries, it is not a group of units or a warmachine. It's just a single unit.

Edit: Just noticed that its rules are stated as in IA3 and 40kApoc.

The Mounted Great Knarloc Herd would be allowed in regular games with permission from your opponent. The Great Knarloc Pack technically should only be used in Apoc games, however, some people play that you can take up to "x" number of points of formations/super-heavy vehicles/gargantuan creatures. Generally it'll be in a high point game, such as 2000 pt army + 500 pt formation. Again it needs to be discussed before hand with your opponent.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
