So I've been really loving how Maneus Calgar's figure looks and I like his special rule. So I've been working on adding him to my army build and wanted to know some goof tactics to run with him.

My army is a biker army (with captain on bike) with three drop pods of dreads that offer heavy support. My idea is to add Calgar with a honor guard or command squad or Termi.s or something in a LR, bikes turbo boost, two dreads hit the field and the LR pops smoke all on turn one giving my enemy alot of targets that have good cover saves (except the dreads that will have done some shooting). I play aggressively with my bikes and Calgar's ability will keep them from running away so I think it sounds good but do you guys think he actually works better in a more foot made list?

Note: not meant to be a hate Calgar thread so please leave hate at the door

Calgar and his honour guard take like more than 300 points and thats not including the honour guards upgrades. You'll probably have to drop the bikes and get less offensive units for it to be effective.

Well like I said, honor guard is not the only option (not really what my first choice would be either)

Well, If i were you, I would run the bikes up and flank the sides while Calgar and the Dreads eat the front. And you should swap the Captain for a Librarian on a bike.
and yes, I said eat.

Edit: Take this with a grain of salt because it probably won't work.

I think your list sounds like a great option, and your tactics are very sound. Give it a shot and tell us how it works out. I'm interested to know.

I believe that most armies need a CC monster to be fun and quirky, and Calgar is not a bad choice, though like Abaddon, I wouldn't field him below 1800+ point matches.

Your bike army idea does sound cool. I'd set them to be attack bikes with Multi-melta when possible and put Calgar plus assault termies (2 hammers, 3 claws) in a Land Raider Redeemer.

Bikes pop transports (the MM on the land raider can help). The flamestoem cannons on the LR will roast plague marines, orks and nids and give your CC deathstar a sound advantage, which will help prevent casualties so it can kick ass longer.

Also, what kind of dreads do you plan to use? If it's going to be CC, Ironclads might give you a bigger bang for your buck with the better front armor. Just be careful about your target priority: if you pop the wrong targets, it means you'll get assaulted by the contents and lose your bikes, or lose the charge with Calgar and his killers. So some long-range support is a sound choice.

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.

In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos.

@Leonus: I will need to keep a captain on bike in my army to make my bikers troops.

@Sephyr: I run a Ironclad, I rifleman dread. and a venerable dread.

Thanks for the replies

Here are my thoughts. I have played a biker army for a few years now, and I hope this helps.

Summary
Calgar costs a ton of points. He can deliver a huge punch in the assault, but he just falls short compared to other ICs that are his same cost. As such, don't plan on using him as a 'power character' that will change every game you play in.
You will need to give him a pimping ride. I would suggest a Land Raider Redeemer or Crusader (depending on your preference). While he can deliver quite a few hits, a little support for him will go a long way. Giving him 5 TH/SS termies as an escort will give you a hammer that can crush units like cans. Giving him terminator armor is optional -- all it does is increase his save from 3+ to 2+.
His ability to

Special Ability
Calgar's ability is awesome, and is vastly undervalued. It makes your entire army better than fearless and better than stubborn. Fearless units in assault take extra hits for every point they lost combat by. You will never lose combat (unless you want to). You never have to worry about 'accidently' failing that leadership test. Fielding 2 attack bikes is no problem for you -- that LD of an 8 will not be a bother. This also nullifies quite a few armies tricks. IG psykers cannot force you to flee off the table. Dark eldar cannot lower your leadership to make it easier for your models to break. They will need to kill every one of your models.

How to Deploy and Use
Calgar' and crew are a 'deathstar' unit. You will be investing ~750 points into this one unit, and expect it to draw a huge amount of fire. You will want to use your bikes to screen it and prevent keep strikers from dropping down to melta the raider. Long range attacks are not very effective against it -- railguns being the worst thing you will face. You will want to start 24" away from the enemy when possible, and then pop smoke on turn one. Turbo-boost your bikes to form a protection layer around it to prevent deep strikers. This will also make it harder for an enemy to walk up and melta you (though tanks can shock your bikes).
At this point, the LR has done its job and delivered the 'deathstar'. You will have a 22" range with your 'deathstar' on turn two. Use that to hit his deathstar -- like Biker Nobs -- or to multi-assault smaller units.
(note, to get this range, you move 12" on turn 2. Deploy so the back of the base is within 2" The terminators have a 2" base. You have a 6" assault range after that.

Great advice labmouse! I feel better about my army choice now with a few people saying how it doesn't totally suck, and many of the advice given matches things I already thought of so I think I'm good to go.

Why not take Calagar and deploy him centrally in a unit of 10 SS TH termies? It could be a decent compliment to the bikes.
