Hi,
i always thought that Magnus was born with only 1 eye.
Also, from Lexicanum:
Magnus, as an infant, was dropped onto the remote colony world of Prospero. He was incredibly fortunate to land here, as anywhere else his cyclopean eye would have made him an outcast, shunned and hunted.

But in "A thousand sons", when he is about to meet the demon down in the planet, he remembers "how dearly it cost him the last time" to win such a battle (for the fate of his sons back then), and touches the smooth skin where his other eye used to be.

Errr...i don't get how that works out ^^

Can anyone please explain to me..i mean..how..wha...whu...? ^^ (and don't tell me he was "Magnus three Eyes" before he became the cyclop )

cheers : )

The Horus Heresy series retconned many things. Magnus' eye(s) are one of them.

Pre-HH, he was born with one eye, in the middle of his face.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Indeed, he always used to have one, single eye (cyclopean).

Its just a retcon (probably to sound more like Odin... although i havent read A Thousand Sons yet, i need to catch back up on the HH novels so i cant talk about the whole thing, just that one line about losing his eye to a demon makes it sound like Odin's sacrifice for knowledge)

I wouldn't assume a "retcon" just because some licensed novel deviates a little. Black Library books do that all the time.

"It all stems from the assumption that there’s a binding contract between author and reader to adhere to some nonexistent subjective construct or ‘true’ representation of the setting. There is no such contract, and no such objective truth."
- Andy Hoare on the subject of "canon", from Aaron Dembski-Bowden's blog

If you prefer him to be born a cyclops, simply disregard this novel author's personal interpretation.

A retcon can be assumed due to the fact that GW have said that the Horus Heresy series is how the Horus Heresy happened.

Retcons are a relatively common occurance in 40k due to the change in scale the production has had.

They did? Where?

Considering how many errors the artbook has and that some of the HH novels even go against current Codex material based on nothing more than an individual author's personal preference, this sounds a bit odd. Not that I'd deem it impossible - the HH series would likely the first to be granted this status due to the level of cooperation and support that went into it - but still ...

They did, on another blog i believe (or at the very least, in an interview of some sorts).

It is a rare occurrence, but the HH was deemed to be the 'definitive story of how the HH went' or something along those lines...they make special mention of it and how all the authors were working together to a set 'script' of how certain things happened.

Do you have a link somewhere? I may have to reassess my stance on the subject of canonicity (again), or at least mention the HH novels as standing apart from my current convictions. For that I'd like to check the exact wording, though ... I know that BL authors like to beat around the bush a little when it comes to this topic, up to and including seemingly contradicting their own statements.

Well that's to be expected when there's different people giving the statements.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Nah, I was referring to the blogs of Gav Thorpe and ADB, where they seem to jump from one opinion to another as if they're a little afraid to tell the truth.

I cant remember where it was from.....it may have been Dan Abnett on the subject of the HH novels and canonicity...and annoyingly, my Google-fu has failed me for the second time today...

Sorry dude, maybe someone else can help.

Given that the Warp has a tenuous relationship to linear time, it is entirely possible that Magnus did not merely sacrifice an eye to defeat a daemon, but sacrificed 'ever having an eye' to defeat a daemon. Magnus, being the one making such a bargain, is the only soul in the universe to know what he has sacrificed. Everyone else knows that Magnus was born a cyclopean outcast, but Magnus alone knows that he chose to exist as a freakish outcast in order to save his sons.

I was thinking something along those lines too, but i was hoping for another theory/ answer, because explaining everything with the warp starts to tire me ..
Thanks for all the answers tho guys : ) I KNEW he was a cyclope with only 1 eye in the middle (read that long before i really started palying WH), but my friends who already played WH always told me they only know him as 1-eyed, but on a "normal" position.

I like to think its the good old human rumour mill.

Magnus lost an eye so only had one. He gained the lovely nickname Cyclops and over the millenium that has been taken literally
so hence the story Magnus had one eye in the middle of his forehead.

Humans like to tell stories and especially when its word of mouth every telling changes the story slightly.

See the majority of historic accounts and tales as reference. Example David v Goliath, the story goes Goliath was a giant, he was bigger than a normal man at that time but not a literal giant.

Nice theory, but Titanicus era games were set during the Heresy. He only had one central eye during that time, which was the present.

From reading 1k sons I thought he had made the deal with tzeentch when he was an infant, in the warp after the primarchs had been scattered.
The "wobbly time in the warp" excuse does seem to be a bit of a blanket canon excuser sometimes.

Iirc the novel states that he does that when he is reunited with his legion.

But what i dont get (speaking about him being an infant) is how he could have talked to his father since he was a baby..but then he needs to crash the golden-throne party to talk to him when he is grown up (and stronger)? O.o

When he was an 'infant' he was mere meters away from his father. Prospero is quite a bit further.

To me, the way he described it, sounded like they were talking until the very moment they met. Gotta read that up again ^.^

The Emperor wanted to hear him then. While he was working on the Golden Throne, he did not.
