I have assembled about 40 CSM models and would like to paint them in the Iron Warrior color schemes. Please advise on:

1) basecoating - black? which type of primer and from whom - GW, P3, etc.?
2) silvery basic coating - which metallic is best? mithril? I'd rather not have them too shiny. We don't want them to look like necrons or GK
3) pipings - shining gold, dwarven bronze, chaos brass, badmoon yellow?
4) inks?

Also what color should the weapons be to stand out in the Iron Warrior scheme?

I do not paint that well and know little about dyes, so advice would be appreciated.

the best easy way to make 'em look old and worn is to do a bolt gun metal drybrush over the black basecoat. Then follow it up with a sepia wash if you want them dirty and grimy.

When I did Iron warriors a while back I based coated them in GW black spray primer. Then did the undercoat in a 50-50 mix of Boltgun Metal with Chaos Black. To "shine" it up a bit I went and dry brushed boltgun over that, very lightly, to pick out the details.

Next I did shining gold for accent colors, like around the shoulder pads, etc. Cover these accents, thinly, with an ogryn flesh wash, this adds an uncared for feel to the gold. Can even add some rust affects to the edges of the armor to make em look worn out. You can do this by making a brown wash from scorched earth (i think) or use powders if you want, and applying thin streaks near the edges, where water would pool.

Sadly, I got rid of this army a long time ago, so no pics, but it looked real good.
