There is something about this photo that was on msnbc that just makes me smile. Why does it do that - it is in reality a sad photo even though it shows the deep love and bond between a mother and child? Is it just the unscripted happiness on the childs face? Is it the fact that it just shows how unimportant color really is? I am a cynical old bastard and always will be but gosh darn it (I think this is a gosh darn it moment) this photo just makes me happy.

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Could it be you're just a big old softie? Although, there will be some on here that tie the fact that you
got the pic from MSNBC a sign that you're just a bleeding heart Liberal.

Whatever the reason, i couldn't agree more with you. It's a fantastically moving pic. I personaly
like how it shows another human face to War.

It is a touching pic. Nice little spot of heartwarming, or alternately, a nice little reminder that we've still got a couple of wars in progress, and real moms and dads are still being sent over there away from their families.

@ineptus - they are rubbing noses as part of the goodbye ceremony. The little girl is laughing I think.

@Mannahnin - yep, a good reminder that real people with real families are abroad in our name. We have two "wars" going on and it isn't reflected in our life in the US.

Really? Because the bias here against Fox seems to be what you're describing. Even in non-political contexts, we still see the "Hurr Fox News" argument (to use the term loosely).

Regardless, a touching picture.

I think the power in the photo comes from the affection between the two, contrasted with the story we all assume is going on - this is a farewell ceremony.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I assume its a welcome back given that neither of the two is crying, etc.

Is it weird that I didn't notice the racial difference until you pointed it out?

Possibly, the little girl picked her pocket and the serviceperson is scowling at her to give it back.
