Was there pre HH =I= or equivalent?
Would an AI be able to be uploaded onto a human brain by way of MIU?

Thanks on the =I=. Little extra reading on my part, and I could have found that out on my own. Apologies.
The AI you would not see happen because of the Ban, or the technology just is not there?
Also, any source material on AI in 40k would be great.

The tech is there but the ban is part of myth and legend...
No one does it because it's a bloody stupd idea because they tried to wipe out all of humanity. The only current AI exists as a 'machine spirit' in some Imperial vehicles such as Titans or Land Raiders. Though Tau may also have some forms of basic AI.

Look up iron men or something like that on lexicanum, it sort of explains why humanity hates AI. Basically they made a robot(s) to go win wars, which it did right until it(they) asked itself why it was fighting for the imperium

*Mankind...
Humanity had a big empire before the robots trashed it. After that they regressed slightly and then the Emperor rocked up and started breaking heads...

The MIU does not grant wet-ware access to the human's mind. Even if s/he did connect to an AI-containing system by way of his MIU, there's no drive space in his skull upon which the AI could write code.
This is, of course, assuming no Warp-entity involved with this AI. If such a thing is present, well, all bets are off.
However, it may be theoretically possible for members of the AdMech, suitably advanced, to have their cortex implants and other brain-ware overwritten by an AI resident in a machine they link to.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

This should tell you much of what you want to know.
And what is the MIU?

Appreciate the link.
The MIU is the Mind Impulse Unit.
"A Mind Impulse Unit (MIU) is a neural link between a sentient brain and a piece of electronic equipment, allowing an individual to control and monitor an electronic system by thought alone. MIU's are most commonly used by Space Marine Dreadnoughts and the crews of the gigantic Titans of the Adeptus Mechanicus but are rarely seen elsewhere. The other uses entail shoulder-mounted weapons which allows the user to fire a weapon whilst keeping both hands free. In some rare cases the weapon is not shoulder-mounted but is carried as normal; the MIU allows the user a greater intimacy with his weapon's internal workings, such as ammunition count or barrel temperature. This is sometimes found amongst the Skitarii Tech Guard of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Wireless MIUs also exist, although they are exceptionally rare and are used to control mechanical familiars or certain types of Servitor. This type of MIU is most common when the user cannot perform a common task himself (perhaps being too large to fit somewhere) or when he prefers to stay out of harm's way."

Basically, the Human brain can directly interface and programm computer hardware, but the reverse process isn't possable under normal circumstances due to the Human brain's massive complexity.
