Hello gentlemen, myself and a friend have just decided to start playing 40k after our HSC (Higher School Certificate for those who don't understand why Tasmanians are objects of ridicule) finishes next month. We both got a hold of copies of the 5th edition rulebook via a kindly friend. He has a few space marines sitting around that he's planning on expanding or possibly simply switch to a Grey Knight list based around Draigo and I was thinking of going orks. Originally we were going to go halves on a AoBR set and split up the models between us, but alas, he's poor. For the start of my army would I be better off investing in the ork battleforce or AoBR? I can always get some money together later and purchase what I didn't get previously, but I'd like to get painting and playing some ~500 point games in the mean-time. Thanks.

Espescially if you have a friend, AoBR. You'll get Marines and Orks to split amongst each other so each side has some forces, and you'll get all those little things that you would otherwise need to buy (dice, templates, etc.)

Of course, Iw ould say get the battleforce next, but if you can only afford one for now? Get AoBR. Remember, most battleforces can not give you a playable army right out of the box.

most importantly, get a codex! with the aobr you can hardly play. and dont get the bf, I think it isnt worth its money; it is one of the bfs with the smallest amount on models in it, and we are talking about a horde army here.

maybe get some nobs, because they habe so many spare parts that you can make the aobr nobs (wich are crap) pretty useful by cutting of the army and putting the spare ones on. And get some killa kans, they are cool and good in the game

Yeah, probably should have mentioned, about the only thing I DO have is a codex. Although no one had told me the battleforce wasn't worth it, I'll have to avoid that, then.

I bought the AoBR box and loved it granted i no longer play orks but having the dice the 50 dollar rule book and some marines was nice.

Get the AOBR box. It gives you things you need. The Ork Battleforce on the other hand is a crazy mess. If you want to make optimized lists then everything in the box is a little scattered since the Bikes are better suited to a bike army on their own. I forget what else comes in the battleforce, but I know AOBR is better since you can get all of the necessary things to start playing.

I wasn't really thinking of optimising anything, for now it's just for funzies.

Buy AoBR, then the codex and after that the battleforce. The BF is very good addition to the AoBR army, but not on its own.

AoBR ultimately gives you an excellent starting force if you want to play Orks or SM. The BF is a supplement cause it gives you points but nothing else cause it has no HQ or all the little accessories. I would do the AoBR and then buy the BF to build on what you already have for points.

So...there's some conflict in the responses here, battleforce yay or nay?

I've got both armies that you are interested in and I got AOBR first, then battleforce boxes for each of them over time. It's the best way to go, and the Ork box has heaps of stuff in it, it's just a bit mixed as people say. But, for first timers its perfect. I am still building mine and I love it!

So, no, get AOBR first I reckon!

Buy AoBR. You get the rulebook, dice, a crapy whippy stick ruler, and a ~600 point army of each side.

Yes, those whippy sticks are crappy, but very good for whipping your opponent! Just don't let your GF get hold of one, they never pull thier whipping! And they try to measure before they shoot!

I do believe that the overall consensus is buy the AoBR first. Wait on the BF just as a starter it gives you everything you need to start playing immediately, then get the Codex. Once you have done all that go for the BF. So to answer your question its not a yay or nay just a wait on it and buy the AoBR. Lol I hope that helps you with your decision and gl and happy killing

Oh, I got that, but I believe someone said the BF was worthless. And I already own a codex so nyuddup nyuddup nyrowr.

and dont forget this, its important:
Don't glue the aobr nobs together! you will regret it! Buy the nobs pack, and use the leftover power klaws, big choppas and stuff on the aobr-nobs, because theese only have the lousiest wargear!!

believe me, its worth it. And you wil have some nobs to ride in your bf trukk, because 10 boys in the armys single trukk are crap.
And dont put backpacks on the big shoota boys; use the to build cool kommandoz from some boys! And if you buy lootas (wich are definetly worth it!!) you can put the cool burna heads on the kommandoz.

And maybe consider buying Killa Kans and a Kff mek.

hope that helps

Edit

forgot something

the battleforce isnt actually worthless (i said that). You still save money if you buy it instead of the seperate components. Its just that its worthless compared to other armys bfs, as it adds up to much less points than others.

so buy it if you want (and after the aobr box), but consider that you get three bikes wich are a little useless on their own, so you will have to buy mor bikes. And a trukk on its own is also a little weak, so you might need another one of these as well.

id say buy it if you like the idear of a fast moving army and if you want to get more fast stuff. Dont buy it if you want footsloggers, cause then you will get useless stuff

to put a figure on what I feel is worth buying...

I've bought 3 AoBR boxes, granted I wanted the marines and the orks

I have also yet to buy a single battleforce... mostly because I dislike trukks, the battleforce imo isn't worth it, the bikes are nice, btu you can get AoBR boyz for so cheap the boyz you get are not worth it

I think it would be wise to see what kind of army you want to build before investing in anything besides AOBR.

Also, you can buy the whole AOBR Ork army from Dicebucket for fairly cheap, if you want to add to your forces easily. For less than the price of the Battleforce you can get TWO MORE AOBR Ork sets.
