What colors should I use to paint Blood Ravens? I was thinking blood red for armor and bleached bone for shoulder pads.

Is their a better way to paint them?

For reds, scab red might be a better choice given how orange Blood Raven armor is...I haven't used the paint myself, but what I've seen of it fits pretty well for the Blood Ravens. Bleached bone sounds perfect for their pads, those things definitely aren't pure white like skull white would give you...

For the pads you can use a mix of khaki and bone as basecoat, earth (thinned down) for shading, and bone for highlights. No idea about the armour, haven't painted big amounts of red lately.

Bleached Bone is the exact color for pauldrons and veteran helmets.

I personally do Vallejo Game Color Heavy Red into GW Badab Black wash and Vallejo Game Color Gory Red, leaving the wash in the crevices for the armor. I gotta say, it looks like an exact copy of the armor in DoW.

I can post pics if needed for reference.

I usually use mechrite red then red gore for the armor, tried blood red at first but it's too orange. Can't wait to see how yours turn out.

I have finished 2 blood ravens using the scab red/bleached bone scheme...I would post pics but I don't have a good camera...but they look pretty good!

Another question, what color should I highlight their armor with, or should I even highlight their armor?

Red Gore is what I've done for Blood Ravens, highlighted with Blood Red. Dheben Stone with Gryphonne Sepia for the pads. Here's the one I painted:

I really like the blood red highlight, I think that's what I'll do

Shining Gold - Highlight
Mithril Silver - Highlight

Eyes:
Scorpion Green - Base
Skull White - Reflection

can someone link a good tutorial for how to do the Eyes on the helmet, I can't seem to get them to look right...

it seems im reviving an old tread, but im about to start a blood raven army so i think i have a say in this

i tested mechrite red washed with devlan mud highlighted with blood red, mechrite red drybrushed with blood red and washed with devlan mud then egdehighlighted with blood red, mechrite red drybrushed with blazing orange and washed with baal red then egdehighlighted with blazing orange and finally mechrite red overbrushed with gore red washed with devlan mud edgehighlighted with blood red with a drop of orange (but i will try this with a lighter color eventually) but the last seems to look the best imo

for the shoulderpads i use calthan brown, then a 50/50 mix of brown and dheneb stone, then a 50/50 mix of dheneb stone and bleached bone and then highlights of bleached bone... applied in very thin layers.. seems to give a good effect! you can add battledmg/dirt with snakebite leather stippled on

Thanks for the tips DijnsK, I'll be sure to test this out once I have the proper paints.

did you ever get around beginning a blood raven army?

i tested out some vallejo paints and they are way better! vallejo's gory red, citadel brown wash, first highlight back up with the gory red, then ad a drop of vallejo bone white in the mix and edgehighlight with that...

for the shoulderpads, basecoat with calthan brown (also a good base for gold parts) then just add a layer of vallejo bone white, which is a really nice and smooth color, then highlight with offwhite

veteran helmets (which are the same color as the shoulderpads) use the same mix as above, and finish with an edge highlight of pure white, which gives a better definition, because heads/faces are a focal point
