Hey Dakka, I've been a long time lurker and decided to give back a little.
I always wanted trenched on my gaming board, but did not want to destroy the board, or buy expensive pieces, so I made my own.
You'll need; a piece of insulation Styrofoam (basically a 2 inch thick board of Styrofoam), something to cut the Styrofoam with(preferably something a bit longer than an xacto blade) a ruler, some Popsicle sticks and a marker.
I picked up the foam from The Home Depot for about 8 dollars.

I marked it at 4 inches, and connected two corners like so;

I cut a 6"x4" rectangle out then cut down the diagonal live, giving me two triangles.( i covered the bottom of mine with duct tape, so it wouldn't get torn up)

Next, you cover the inside walls with popsicle sticks cut down to scale.

You can use any recipe you want for basing it, I covered it in craft glue then threw some dirt on top

Painting is the last step, it's entirely up to you on what color to paint it!

I worry about plain styrofoam as a base material, same with duct tape. What if it peels?

Ther fact that low density styro is inadiquete for terrain, and Duct tape doesnt hold paint well, would be a couple of my worries. I applaud you for attempting the tutorial though.

No disrespect intended, but i think i have to agree with Takeshishin, the styrofoam hasn't given me any problems(yet).
But I do agree that styrofoam isn't the best choice for a lot of terrain projects.
