My club has started an escalation tournament, starting at 400 pts and working up. I played a practice game against the Tau and noticed a distinct trend among tau players. They take a commander, with missile pod and plasma rifle, and move, shoot, jump. Thus avoiding any return fire. A lucky turn of shooting can shut down my mobility (only one transport) and then I'm at the mercy of a much faster opponent who can avoid return fire.

I play black templars (on foot) and Imperial Guard (with one transport)

Missile launchers will kill them easily. They only have 3+ so krak missile will go through. Also since it's S8, they die instantly. But if they keep hiding from you, try bikes.

Assault marines work great against Tau, even a small group can usually easily defeat any Tau unit. For Guard, it is perhaps harder to figure counter.

Mr Vetock, give back my Multi-tracker!

Yep, cram a krak missile down his throat. Or spam him with autocannon shots.

The real problem is that i can never get line of sight because they're jumping all over the place

However the assault marine idea has merit

If you were using C:SM, I would suggest bikes as troops.
A captain with a relic blade, plus one squad of bikes with MG or PG and a multi-melta attack bike would do the trick. Just turbo-boost near him. Weather the fire for a round, then end him in either assault or shooting.
