I want to know if Space Wolves before a fight would paint their faces a little bit like Mel Gibson in Braveheart?

No and I advise either to pay attention in your history classes or to tell the principal to fire the history teacher. But I am quite sure that the first reason is the problem here.

I have a few Space Wolves with woad on them.

It's personal preference really. Do you want to make you Space Wolves Norse? Or do you want to make them pictish/Celtic?

I've gone the best of both worlds and put Woad on my counts as MOTF models. And lined up the hull and sides of my two rhinos with Marauder shields.

Vikings do not paint their faces before battle... But celts do.

I can see that. I don't think there's any cannon about it, but it fits in the idea of the army.

I'm steeling that idea.

Typical for Canada and USA they know only their short 200-300 years history... So you fail big time boy. Vikings have been in your country(the land on which is your country). SO MUCH FAIL.

yeah I know in Newfoundland for a couple of years ! I heard that , but they never mentioned facepaint

It's argued that Vikings discovered the North American continent before Colombus did, but I digress.

Blue and green would have been the most common colors, based on availability of vegetable dyes, but it really depends on where, exactly, you lived in the Celt/Nordic world when painting your face, as that would affect what dyes would be easily to hand.

Ofc they will not. Vikings do not paint their faces before battle. Space wolves are based on vikings. "So do space wolves paint their faces before battle?" - NO! And I'have never read anything about that in the fluff for the wolves.

Learn from the mistakes that the dudes back in the days did and do not repeat them. That is why there is history.

There's some evidence, by no means conclusive or universal, that Vikings may have painted their faces black to appear more frightening, from written accounts dating back to the 10th century, and several skulls with dyed, engraven teeth have been found in Viking burial sites.

I read this and wanted to call you out for being a d***, but then I thought about all the dumba** high school students i have met and all I can say is... its true *hangs head in shame*. I'd bee surprised if I met an average American high schooler who even had a good grasp of U.S. history...

Actually Ibn Fadlan wrote that the Rus were tattooed head to toe. That would include the face if you were wondering. So yes SWs could have facial markings and still fulfill thier pseudo historical background.

I would have to call that essay into question. I am by no means a Viking expert but, i don't know who Mark Fleming is nor could I find anything about him on the net (nothing on that site about him but his other essays were about Star Wars and Flash Fiction). Also, I saw no references or citations of any kind in the essay. The couple books I have read never spoke of 'paint' (as opposed to tattoos) but some those books, as with most history books, have been called into question by the authors. I don't know any scandanavian language and have only read translated sagas, but I haven't yet read about berserkers painting themselves (though I have read passages describing them, talking about wearing wolf pelts and bloody shields. This really only shows I have very little knowledge on the subject. Still, I get the impression that that paper on Helium isn't the most credible work.

I completely understand your misgivings, probably for the same reason that I hate seeing every Viking clad in a horned helmet. Even the word 'Viking' is bandied about to cover all the Norse when really it was an act or an occupation (ie: to go Viking). I think we could conclude that it's credible enough to use for a fictional universe where Space Vampires, Terminators from the Terminator movies and other hollywood themes exist ad infinitum. Hollywood trumps historical fact in the 40k universe anyway.

Well, iirc the tribesman out on the murder-make at the beginning of "Prospero Burns" had their faces painted to ward of bad ghosts, and "Bear", the SW, also has tattoos in his face.
So i guess, depending on the tribe your SW might origin from, it could be possible that they paint their faces, no matter what real vikings did or did not.

Vikings didn't wear power armour and use tanks. Space Wolves are based on Vikings. "So do Space Wolves wear power armour and use tanks?"

The magic word is "based". No 40k race is an exact copy of something historical. Even today's descendants of Vikings know tatoos and sometimes use camo face paint. We can't predict what a wild people 38.000 years later would do.

Funny though that a member called FuryTheBerserker doesn't know the history of Viking Berserkers, but then again his name isn't HistoryProfessor
