I've found out that there are quite some differences between the people i know; one plays to win and crush you completely, not taking a damn how fun it is for you, anotherone takes it less serious and only plays for fun. I like to win, but if im winning too easily and the game is about to end, I will do some bad moves on purpose, to meáke the game last longer and be more fun.

So why do you play a game? Do you want to see the table purged from the unclean? Do you only want to have fun and are you happy if you lose, as long as it was fun?

I really want to enjoy the game and have my opponent enjoy it too. That being said I can be competitive and I don't like losing. I don't mind losing a hard fought game, but getting blown out suuucks. I only try to play soft if the person i'm playing is new to the game. I don't get to play a ton of games so when i get the chance I want to really enjoy that 2 hours.

I pretty much lose every game I play. As long as I don't get swept, I enjoy myself.

this survey seems skewed... somehow like you're trying to say playing to the best of your ability with tactics is no fun...

I never, ever deliberately try to lose. That's not fair to my opponent. I will, however, make poor tactical choices if they seem like fun or potentially awesome ones though! I play for fun but I'm not going to be a slouch player just because we're playing casually.

Biased poll is biased. I don't see how any of the statements make any sense... Fun and Winning are not mutually exclusive and neither are fun and losing.

I play to win the game, and use my favourite tactics to empty the table

Simple explanation; I play to win cause I don't think it's fair on my opponent not to give it my best/all and try to win. My favourite tactics are big explosions and plasma guns the wiping out part comes from me playing an aggressive short range army, not exactly easy all the time to consolidate on a win.

Well I tried to come up with statements that make sense;

"I play to win the game, and use my favourite tactics to empty the table" - this means that you try to win. This doesnt say you dont have fun, it says you do whats smartest and enjoy winning

"I like to win, but fun comes first" - apparently you will use the odd stupid tactic in order to make the game more gripping and suspenseful, provided you are winning by far.

"I dont care if I win or loose, as long as the game is fun" - you are the kind of person who charges his grots into termies hoping they do something hilarious, insdead of running to the game-winning objective.

I did not try to manipulate the poll with my choice of words

Well... Both the first and second apply to me.
I play to win, and use my FAVOURITE tactics... where Favourite is the key word. It's not the best tactic, it's the tactic I prefer...
Which kind of overlaps into "I like to win, but fun comes first." Because using my favourite tactic = fun to me, and I try my best to win with that tactic.

Although I don't really wargame anymore (just make the models), but back when I did, I played only for fun. We would often set up scenarios where it was impossible for one team to win (For example, a last stand type of deal) just to play it out for fun, or doing dumb stuff like charging a 'mech with no support into the middle of a crowd of enemies.

However, I only played with friends I knew personally as we got into battletech together.

I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" way to play, although I have met people way to competitive elitist for my tastes. I don't really think its possible to be "too casual" though.

Win/lose - it's all the same.

As long as there is beer and my little wardollies are on the table, I'm a happy camper. It doesn't matter if you're about to 20-0 me if I've got a beer.*

*Majority of our tournaments are 'dry' events due to venue restrictions and regs. It's why I don't play in many.

I'm definitely in the "just have fun" camp. Some of the best games I've played are when I'm fighting for the lives of my little plastic men in a futile attempt to defy destruction round by round. Watching a master at work picking apart my army and tactics is fascinating to me and sometimes, just sometimes I manage to learn from my mistakes afterwards.

Whenever I do win, I get the sneaking suspicion that I didn't really deserve or earn it, stealing any enjoyment and replacing it with filthy guilt. :-(

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Indeed. I'm puzzled as to why the three options should be mutually exclusive. I play to win, and I play to have fun.

I play because I enjoy playing. I dont care if i win at all, hence the reason I do things like charging heroes with one wound left into a unit of 10 cold one knights. (I won that combat!)

But that's just it: all three options are essentially the same thing.

I don't care if I win or lose, having a fun game is what it's all about. But I still play to win.

I don't care if I win as long as I have a blast playing the game. That does not mean I TRY to lose of course, but if there is a chance to get the Generals in combat with each other I'll take it! Dont matter if it's Creed vs a Hive Tyrant, I'll try to make it happen.

That does mean I lose a lot more than I win but wtf, it's just a game!
