Played a guy who deployed Ogryns in front of a Chimera. I shot at the chimera, the guy claims the vehicle gets cover because I shot through the unit and I only had LOS to 50% of the vehicle's body.

Yes or no?

Would this work with a sentinel screen instead of Ogryns?

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.

Did you have LOS to 50%+ of the vehicle? If not, then you give a cover save

It does not matter WHAT other unit / terrain is obscuring your vehicle - you would get a save if it obscures enough

Any time cover for a vehicle comes up we dakkites can't really give you an honest yes or no without a picture to look at. I will go ahead and take your word that 50% was obscured in that case yes he will get a cover save. It doesn't matter if it is ogryns, sentinels, or a wall. If anything blocks the vehicle at least 50% you are intitled to a cover save.
He is partly right on that he does get cover for the vehicle becuase of the unit, but he is wrong since it is not JUST because he shot through the unit.

I don't have my rule book in front of me, but all vehicles are units, and it says whenever firing through a unit to target another unit, they get a cover save. Then you go specifically into the vehicle rules which state what counts as cover for a vehicle.

If the vehicle is 50%+ obscured it gets a save

Vehicles are different. The BRB says they are treated like infantry with the exception of... and then goes into the vehicle section. There it mentions the part about needing 50% cover. An image of a rhino and a building come directly to mind.

Then that falls back into the is it 50% covered or not argument...

I wish they would just layer cover, soft cover, medium cover, hard cover, and the like.

As has been said, 50%+ obscured = vehicle cover save. The fun bit is determining if 50% is indeed obscured through TLOS. I really dislike this rule as it seems completely dependent on everyone playing in "good faith". In an adversarial game system...that's always asking a bit much.

We have a house rule, if you both disagree you roll a dice for it, on a 4+ you get your call, on a 1-3 your opponent gets their call.

Oddly, that is not a house rule, just one that has no bearing on rules discussion.

That is a great way to handle disputes at home, but I've found things don't go so neatly in the wider world.

Please stick to RAW not house rules, pseudo house rules etc. (the rulebook tells you to do this also) however it's against tenets of YMDC to bring up TMIR

Mind you it takes alot of guardsmen to obscure a LRBT
