OK, Lets break this down because it came up tonight that the store I was playing at was doing it wrong, or perhaps I was.

Scenario:
Two units are engaged in close combat with a drawn combat.

Next players turn
Another unit decides to join into the fray, and assaults the unit from behind and joins the melee. All the units from the previous assault phase were previously "engaged" with each other. Can the enemy units that were engaged previously with the other unit, turn and attack the unit joining the melee from behind, or must they direct their attacks toward the unit they were previously engaged in?

Please help on this one, and locate relevant rules, as it became quite the disagreement. (not disrupting really, but I dont like not knowing the rules on this)

Yes they can attack whomever is a legal target at the start of the round of combat, this includes the guys that just assaulted.

This is covered in the FaQ.

ERRATA
Page 41 – Multiple Combats, Attacking.
A third bullet point should be added, as follows:
• Models that at the beginning of the combat (before
any model attacked) were engaged with more than
one enemy unit, but were in base contact with just one
of the enemy units, must attack that unit.

Page 41 – Multiple Combats, Attacking.
In all three bullet points, the word ‘combat’ will be
changed to ‘round of combat’.

I had some guy try to pull the you cant assault my guys card on me once at a tournament. We called the TO over and he sided with his friend on I couldn't attack the new guys.So depending on how the gaming group plays it they might still tell you you are wrong.
