So i am getting a CSM army and i am having a really hard time thinking up a good color scheme. I don't really like the color schemes that the codex has in it. I really want them to have a gold trim, i was thinking of white with a gold trim but Chaos doesn't look that good with bright colors unless its a Slaanesh themed army(Which it is not). You guys have any good color schemes ideas?

Go with the colors you like. I incorporate green into every army i paint as it's my favorite color, no matter what the army is. I am thinking of picking up some Khador for Warmachine and i'll be painting them green too. It's my hobby and i'll do what i want. SO..... a really dark Green is really awesome with a Gold lining but pretty much any color looks good with gold.

What's the theme, or god, of the army? It should really correspond to that.
(oh, and no army should have "generic" as its theme)

what is your skill level at?

my strategy is just to think of gak that i like, and then paint along that theme. my CSM are in a skulltakers / word bearers color scheme (dark red with silver trim) that I'd visualized before i'd even looked in the codex.

what's some gak you like? do you like tigers? orange and white with black stripes would be an awesome theme. you like optimus prime? blue and red. you like pandas? black and white. whatever. the model is your oyster and you're only limited by your own creativity.

Well the theme is like the Black legion it has a little of everything, but i don't really like the Black and gold color scheme(plus nearly every Chaos player i see paints them as the Black Legion). i was thinking of painting the Berserkers, Thousand sons, Noise Marines and Plague Marines the regular colors but have one of their shoulders to be painted my army color. And have the regular Marines, Bikers, Vehicles..etc painted gold and another color i cant decide on. Maybe something like they capture other CSM and brainwash them into fighting for them, maybe not brainwashing but somehow force them to fight for them.

White with gold trimming.

Purple and gold are classic, followed by green and gold. Personally I'm trying to stay away from black, white, and red as much as possible, as it seems 75% of the armies at any event I go to are painted using those three colors. If you wan't to go for something a bit darker that will cause the gold to really pop, try Paynes Grey. I've played around with it a bit, and it really seems to bring out the other colors that you put over/next to it.

One that I came up with when I was considering a chaos army was basically dheneb stone with dark red highlights and gold trim. The big plusses were that it wasn't black, whcih felt played out, and it wasn't solid red. And it looked really ancient to me, which I figured would go well with chaos.

What i did was a base coat of boltgun metal and blood red , it gives it a fantastic rust effect.

I love the night lords scheme but i made mine a bit darker than standard. I based black undercoated necron abyss painted regal blue over and a very thin retouch of necron abyss for the gold trim 2:1 ratio of shining gold tin bitz.

I will see if i can find some pics

White with gold trim would be very appealing to the eye, however, white can be very tricky to get right so you may need to practice first!

I don't think white is an issue for Chaos. Make it a bit dirty, a bit worn and chipped. Or use bleached bone or dheneb stone or rotting flesh. I can actually see an army like that being quite nurgley or Tzeentchy.

Other colours that go well with gold are indigo (you'd have to mix regal blue and liche purple for that) a rich brown like scorched brown and light teal (again would have to be mixed).
