So I'm gunna be visiting a few clubs over the next few months, and I've been invited to one through dakka by a green tide player. Pretty standard list, ghazzy, kff, tons of boyz. Being that green tides essentially do what tyranids do, but better and for less points, what would dakka recommend as a tyranid list to counter the tide? Assuming a game of 1750-2000 pts, and that the only models I don't have access to are the swarmlord and tervigons, how should I proceed? I really wanna take the bugs as the guy who invited me has never fought them, but I don't feel like travelling for and setting up a 2k game just to get steam rollered.

Cheers,
Special K

As a starting point, my usual lists look alot like this:

Dakka tyrant

2x tyrant guard

Deathleaper

2x hiveguard

2x hiveguard

4x10x genestealers

20x termagants

6~9x h2h warriors

20x gargoyles

Dakkafex

Trygon

Trygon prime

Not an actual list but some of my most common units. I do have enough in my collection to do almost anything other than tervigon spam.

Just take as many monstrous creatures as possible with some genestealers and broodlords. It worked fine on me as an ork green tide player...

He did fine with one tervigon and it was really annoying, raising termagants and blocking my charges...

Fully Painted Armies: 2200pts Orks 1000pts Space Marines 1200pts Tau 2500pts Blood Angels 3500pts Imperial Guard/Renegades and 1700pts Daemons 450pts Imperial Knights

I think you have a pretty good chance of winning,

10 genestealers with toxin sacs cannot win against 30 boys, they would leave about 1/2 of them alive and all die to the counter attack. 2 squads of GS w/ TS on the other hand are going to wipe them out or make them fall back. It should be easy to multi-assault just due to the shear mass of table space 30 boys takes up.

The main thing I would be cautious of is keeping your big bugs out of CC with boys squads, the PK nob would kill them in a round or 2.

I would leave deathleaper in the case, he has his uses, but I don't see one versus orks.

Doom on the other hand would be loving life against green tide, but the other guy may want to punch you.

If you have the models I would take a hormie squad and outflank them and all the Genestealers, they both have great threat ranges from the sides.

That is all I can think of atm.

Focus fire on one mob, then assault it dead is the basic strategy when fighting orks.

Thanks for the replies.

DoomMouse- I do have one tervigon, I don't often use it as I have a habit of rolling doubles on the first turn and not spawning any more gaunts.

Grabzak - I was definitely thinking of the doom. And would the stealers really need toxin sacs? Most of the ork army is t4 anyway.

Poison in close combat now gives you re rolls when toughness is less than or equal to your strength. So against Orks those poisoned attacks are letting you wound on a 4 with re rolls

Oh really? Worth it then. That's quite awesome. And actually I have a huge number of hormagaunts, so they might make an appearance.

Watch out for Ghaz. He's slow so run around him and Multi Assault. Also remember that when they're in 18" Range they will assault you.

And secondly the Doom is the bane of anyones life. A must have.

I wouldn't deepstrike since most of the Board is covered by Orks.

Tervigon is probably worth considering, will be hard for boyz (excluding pk nobz) to take down in cc, and if you are using termagants within 6" of the tervigon they get counterattack which can be lulzy. And nothing says FFFFFUUUUUUUU like sitting a few inches away from combat crapping out gants and sending em into the grinder

Failing that, doom seems like a rather good idea .

So outflanking and keeping out of the 18" assault range? And I never deep strike anyway. Should I try to bait him into an early waaagh and then pile in, if I can?

Also I love the idea of using paroxysm on ghazzy.

Also to anyone who uses tervigons, how many termagants should I bring to spawn?

You need to deep strike Doom or he's just going to nuke him on the way up the table.

You should be OK with spods, as they have the same rule as marine pods to always scatter minimum distance to avoid obstacles. If they leave a spod-sized hole in the middle of their force you can be extremely accurate.

Pod + deployed unit size - cause if you can't deploy the unit but the pod fits, the unit goes byebye.

The unit *is* a single 40mm base though

Templates, blasts and large blasts (if Nids have any). Against a Green Tide is maybe, maybe the one place where a Pyrovore would be useful. However, Biovores would definitely be nice, along with as many other blast and large blasts as you can get. The trick is not to have good shooting, but to have a whole heapin' lot of it.
