Hello, my friend and I are just starting out, and we agreed to both make 1500 point lists. After looking through the codex, I cobbled a list together, but I imagine there are lots of ways I could improve it.

What I have so far:

HQ

Vulkan – 190

Troops

Tactical Squad- 10 models – melta, multimelta, chainsword, meltabombs, rhino, extra armor- 230
Tactical Squad- 10 models – melta, multimelta, chainsword, meltabombs, rhino, extra armor- 230
Tactical Squad- 10 models – melta, multimelta, chainsword, meltabombs, rhino, extra armor- 230

Elite

Ironclad Dreadnaught – heavy flamer, drop pod – 180
Sterngaurd Squad- 9 models – multimelta x2, meltabombs, chainsword, rhino, extra armor- 290

Heavy

Predator- twin-linked lascannon, heavy bolter sponsons, dozer blade, extra armor - 150

total=1500

Thanks for your help!

Vulkan is a bit expensive at this points range.

I would give combimeltas to the tac. squads as 2 shots at important targets is needed.
I would give one unit a flamer and then maybe the serg a combiflamer or a powerweapon to give some troop killing element.
Drop podding dreads is hair raising stuff. In particular your Iron clad will land in melta distance do nothing and then be melted away before getting into cc.
Sternguard(they could be drop podded) I would give some combimeltas or maybe a couple of meltas. They would need not to move to use the multimelta. I would go for ten with combimeltas if drop podded but 6 in a rhino with 2 lascannons or 6 in rhino with 2 meltas and 2combimeltas and 2 combiflamers or something like that.

I am ok without extra armour also I would bring another pred to give suitable covering fire for the advancing rhinos.

My take is tacs are great - true grey hunters are better but tacs are solid - if you taking them as your core, load them out

combimelta, powerfist, melta, multimelta, rhino - 250
combiflamer, powerfist, flamer, heavy bolter or ML, rhino - 245

Good, solid core

Now you need a fire support to hold an objective and inflict some hurt

10 tacs with pg or m with LC is good, sniper scouts with ML and telion works too, although you need to protect them a lot more

now what are you going to do to take down an assault threatening your line, ie counter assault? Your tacs can look after themselves however they will not be winning assaults and freeing themselves up quickly a lot of the time, so you need a floating counter assault - I like assault marines with a thunder hammer to achieve this

Finally staggering his assault on your line is brilliant because you can gang up on what arrives piecemeal - some devestators with 3 ML is a nice way to stop a rhino or trukk, I like 5 Devs with a LC and 2 ML at 155, its a bit pricey but resilient and potent for at least 2 turns or hitting, which is all you really need it to achieve

Sternguard are great - I dont use them because I steer clear of elites (snobbery, ill be honest) as they outside my company - they do well with combiweapons although I would try and keep them to infantry work given how good their special ammo is

TFC is gold, if fragile - worth considering

Dreads have their place although I dont use them - too easy to take down - their role should include MCs like daemon princes and big bugs however these opponents eat them for breakfast, so I would recommend a shooty Dread if you want one, TLLC and ML at 145 (preferred) or rifleman with two TLAC at 125 - he should stay in cover and hope he does not take a penetrating hit

Preds are ok, but only ok. Devestators are more expensive but last far better and can pack a lot more firepower if kitted well. Pred with LC sponsons is 120, A dev team with BS5 lascannon and two Krak shots, that can take 5 wounds, is 155 points.

Happy list building - vanilla marines rock - enjoy!
