I'm wondering if anyone here who has magnetised models has had problems with taking them on airplanes? I'm currently having a bit of a panic about magnets being considered dangerous goods, since I'm headed down to Games Day Australia tomorrow and some of my army (for my Armies on Parade entry) is magnetised. Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

Unless you're using massive ones, they shouldn't be a problem. I've had 6mm and smaller rare earth magnets sent through the post before with no problems, and Aust Post likewise classes 'powerful magnets' as dangerous goods.

If you really want to make sure, the dangerous goods classification does include an actual rating (in whatever unit magnetism is measured in, can't remember off the top of my head) that is considered untransportable. If you can find some specs for the magnets you've used, you would be able to compare.

If you're just using small stuff for holding weapons on, though, it really should be fine.

Thanks for the reply! Logic dictates that yeah, they'd be too small to affect anything, but agh paranoid, heh.

The largest ones I've used so far are only about 5mm diameter x 2mm height, most of them are either 2mm or 3mm diameter. Got one pair holding each sponson in my land raider in, four pairs in my defiler, and a number of smaller ones in my terminator sorcerer.

Also trying to figure if they'd be okay for me to actually take as carry-on luggage, or if I'd have to put it in with the check-in luggage. Which I don't want to do 'cause augh, don't want to let my models out of my sight. D:

The magnets I used are from the ModiFX magnet starter pack http://www.modifx.com/shopexd.asp?id=1&bc=no but it doesn't list the specs. It'd help if the http://www.iata.org website was working for me at the moment too, bleh.

I carried my eldar army with me to Canberra as carry-on luggage last year (tanks and wraithlords are magnetised with 3x1mm magnets) - flew via Sydney. Had no issues either way.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

That won't be a problem, then. They're no bigger than the magnets used in a lot of jewellery.

Thanks all! And after an email and follow-up phone call with Qantas, it's been confirmed that my magnetised stuff will be fine to go on the plane with me. Whew! Crisis averted.

Now, back to packing my board... so awkward, argh. XD
