I'm running a DA Codex successor chapter and recently traded for about a thousand points of old, badly painted and glued equipment (the trade was more than worthwhile even with that). One of the items is a metal dread where the legs are so heavily glued and painted I can't strip them or get them off the body without the use of a saw.

Seeing some of the conversions that people have done online I came up with a thought but wanted to get some opinions on it first.

If I were to saw the legs off and scratch-build a tracked base, would the effect have too much the look of Chaos to pass on a DA list? I'm still pretty new to the game and the canon story-archs so I thought this would be a good place to get an idea if that would be too crazy.

What do people think?

High Elves - 510 points unpainted
Would it be wrong to build a 'nids army and call it Hive Fleet Giger?

Blood for the blood god? Does that include slicing multiple fingers while working on one conversion?

If it's metal you should be able to disolve the glue and paint on the dread with a soak in an acetone based nail-polish remover.

The dread is probably epoxied if its that hard. It needs a solvent bath. Paint section acetone should work. Or put it in the freezer and twist th upper half away from the lower.

Metal dreads should respond well to the "Freeze and Whack" method. * Disclaimer - dropping them on a concrete floor has been known to make dents

This thread suddenly got me wondering if there is a noticeable difference in the toughness, shear strength, tensile strength, torsion strength, and compression strengths of various glues...

Yeah, in the concrete.

This should be fine. Background wise the Imperium is generally terrified of any sort of technological tinkering and deviations from near sacred Standard Template Constructs. However, marines, especially a chapter as venerated as the Dark Angels can get away with all kinds of things.
Your Dreadnought could contain a Techmarine who continues his work with machines even in his current state.
