I'm assembling my Furioso and I'm wondering if I should glue on the heavy flamer (for 10 pts extra) instead of the standard storm bolter.

I'm concerned about flaming the bad guys and ending up outside of assault range...

So heavy flamer: yay or nay?

If flaming too many enemies is a risk in a particular turn, then just don't do it on that turn. The rest of the time, it seems useful against swarms trying to tarpit you, probably more useful than a stormbolter.

The other nice thing about the heavy flamer upgrade is the second chance to wreck things like triukks and raiders and venoms so that you can claw the hell out of the squishy goo inside. Admittedly, when it comes to popping vehicles, the magna grapple is a better second shot, but having the heavy flamer as an option doesn't hurt.

Alternatively, you could always magnetize.

^ When in doubt . . . magnetize. Although I would definitely ditch a good number of things for getting a heavy flamer on a Furioso. AV13 means they won't die very easily and the heavy flamer prevents the tarpitting(except from wyches).

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

It's an assault weapon isn't it (IIRC)? Shoot, then charge.

It's just a good way to take out some models before ramming into them like a giant robot wrecking ball.

Heavy flamers are assault weapons. However, when you put them on walkers, you can shoot anything and then charge, so it's a moot point.

There will always be the risk of shooting yourself out of assault. That comes down to quick probabilities and an eye for range.

When in doubt, remember that storm bolters on vehicles are LAME, and fire is awesome.

I ususally drop pod my dreads, so they are not assaulting that turn anyway. Try lookinf for soft targets to drop next to, and flame on. Thats really all I use it for, but it is very effective on low armoured units. Save the melta and magma grapple for everything else.

I always run furiosos with heavy flamers. Their DCCWs and meltas give them great anti-tank power. The heavy flamer makes them a bigger threat to infantry too. Especially if they, say, pod in in front of some long fangs or other static infantry unit.
