Fairly cool stuff. This drive can be powered by electic current generated by solar energy, and uses no reaction mass. It's gone through testing and the results have been replicated several times. Using no reaction mass means satelites could stay in orbit indefinitely. And it's interesting to think of how it might have other uses and applications.

The relevance to Dakka? The inventor, Guido Fetta, is a friend of mine and a gamer.

Their website just went public: http://www.cannae.com/

Thanks for the post. I'm a big space tech geek who loves reading about stuff like this.

Ion drives have been around since the 60's and they still are overlooked for the same reasons, conventional propellants are relatively reliable and cheap. Still if you want to chase a comet or something that requires continual acceleration at very slow rates then I guess here is another option.

This isn't an ion drive. This is in effect a railgun that pulls itself up by its bootstraps. For this reason, I'm going to stick with "fake!" until further notice.

Just had a look at the website - pretty elaborate if it's a "fake"...

I'm no techie, but seems a lot of trouble to go to...

Another cool potential... found this week on the interwebs.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/30/more-details-on-mits-artificial-leaf-and-video/

"Back in March, we heard about a breakthrough from MIT: an “artificial leaf” that produces pure oxygen and hydrogen gas, powered entirely by sunlight. The technology was described in yesterday’s edition of Science, and the team has released a video showing one of the devices in action."

Technology getting crazy especially for potential in space one of these days ;D

This is all very well and cool, but I'd question it's viability as a thread in wargaming N&R...

That artificial leaf is amazing too. So many problems could be solved by that.

Seems perfectly viable as people are interested in the News aspects of it, and also Discussing it.

A drive with no reation mass. First read about this as an idea in Battlefield Earth when I was 9. Would truly make our first generation colony ships a big leap closer.

The artificial leaf is REALLY cool. All kinds of fuels applications.

They've been working on it for about 5 years, and only announced it publicly after all the initial testing. This stage is the "Please try to disprove this physically or mathematiclly if you can."

I found it interesting that one of the things they were happy about is having the government restrict their travel. ) I gues that's a sign someone's decided you just might have something they want.

You don't get it - if this was true, it would be up there with Cern's faster-than-light results. I'd expect a response more along the lines of "Holy ****! American man breaks Newton's Third Law of Motion with reactionless drive!" not just a handful of free patent websites.

All it demonstrates is that you claim that they claim the government thinks they might have something they want. People on the internet claim lots of crazy things are true. That doesn't mean they're right.

No, you don't get it. Nobody's claiming a reactionless drive, the guy allegedly created a propulsion device without *reaction mass*. I can't tell if you're a troll or you just lack basic reading comprehension. It redirects radiation pressure to produce thrust, it's not some necron tomb ship or something.

Went digging through my old posts, and guess what? I've been hating on mat ward since before it was cool

Then why does it purportedly require producing an imbalanced Lorentz force to operate? A device that redirects radiation pressure to produce thrust isn't a "resonating cavity drive", it's a solar sail.

Read this page, and then accuse me of being a troll again.

Oh helll boy, I could give a rats arse what you think, or if anyone believes it.) Don't think for a second I need to convince you. This isn't a rules arguement in YMDC, or some rant in off topic. I'm not going to debate it with you. Don't need to. The only reason I know about this is I sell Guido his gaming fix for the last decade, and have enough backgroud in math that I can just barely understand the concepts. Cool enough break through with such a sci fi element that I thought I'd share it.

ON topic... Looks cool enough. I dont have any knowledge of this sort of thing so i wont even begain to debate whether its a massive troll or not. I hope its legit. If it is well done to those who created it. If not, well done on mass troll.
