Hey.

My IG stocking friend, who got me into WH40k in the first place, challenged me to battle him in our local GW store. That made me turn the screw and paint last few troops for my 500 point Necron squad.
10 were missing the sand on their bases but had to make do. At least they are now baptised in fire and I know what this game looks like outside of (*cough* horribly unbalanced *cough*) AOBR demo game we had at that store previously and reading battle reports on Dakka(tm)

Please keep in mind I don't remember all details and the whole memory of this event is clouded by excitement and overall fun
Anyway, here are the army lists:

Werewolf's Imperial Guard

HQ (85 pts):

Lord Commissar (85 pts)
- Power Fist

TROOPS (340 pts):

Infantry Squad (70pts)
-Autocannon
-Sergeant + Power Weapon

Infantry Squad (70pts)
-Autocannon
-Sergeant + Power Weapon

Platoon Command Squad (30 pts)

Veteran Squad (170 pts)
-Chimera (dedicated transport)
-5x Lasgun
-Missle Luncher
-2x Plasma Gun

HEAVY SUPPORT (75 pts):

Hydra Flack Tank (75 pts)

Dexter's Necrons

HQ (140 pts):

Necron Lord (140 pts)
- Destroyer Body
- Warscythe

TROOPS (360 pts):

10x Necron Warriors (180 pts)

10x Necron Warriors (180 pts)

Rules:

- we agreed that buildings are not to be occupied (to simplify the game by not taking floors and stuff)
- buildings are providing cover 4+, craters 5+ and the stone aquilla is just an obstruction (difficult terrain)
- 6 rounds
- who has more units (point wise) on the table at the end of 6th turn wins

Deployment:

Foreword: I will try to narrate this from my own perspective as it's what I remember best. Next time I will try to writ down exact moves taken. So, um, pardon me if I don't mention every single move.

Warewolf won the deployment roll and chose the side he wanted leaving a large open ground for me to cross under his gunfire.
Here's the deployment pic:

I won the dice roll and chose to go first.

Turn 1:

Necrons:
- Warriors #1 run towards building wall successfully going toe to wall. Cover gained.
- Warriors #2 run onwards in straight line
- Necron Lord hits the Turbo Boost and moves 24" towards the tanks

Imperial Guard:
- Chimera moves a bit onwards
- some dakka dakka occurs all being aimed at Warriors #2, some Necrons die
- Hydra goes all out Autocannon against Necron Lord, 4 hits, 3 wounds -> Necron Lord fails horribly by rolling 1,1,1 on save. True story bro! (I facepalm'd at this point)

Turn 2:

Necrons:
- fallen Necrons from Warriors #2 take We'll Be Back roll and all stand up
- fallen Necron Lord also comes back up with 1 wound.
- Warriors #1 run onwards again, exiting the building via doors and windows in the wall they ware touching (not sure how far they ran)
- Warriors #2 run aswell, and are now somewhere near that stone aquilla

Ok time for the fun part:

- Necron Lord charges at Chimera, scores 3 hits, 1 goes as glance - 2 as penetration
- Penetration roll is = 6 and the Chimera is gone from the table leaving a nice crater behind
- Some guardsmen die from blast along with few Veterans from inside the Chimera
- Lord gets merely flickered by the blast

Imperial Guard:
- all out dakka dakka against Warriors #2 continue, few Necrons go down
- Hydra does some shooting at Warriors #1, again few troops go down
- confused Veterans shake of the dirt, stop wondering where did Chimera go and start shooting at the lord
- 2 plasma guns overheat, 1 veteran blows up along with his gun
- rest of the squad menages to shoot Necron Lord into being dead again

Turn 3:

Necrons:
- again some Warriors #2 raise back up but this time 2 fail the roll and stay dead (['] Papa will miss you guys...)
- same with Warriors #1 though I don't recall exact values here
- Necron Lord is back for unimaginable 2nd comeback
- both Warrior groups move 6" towards IG
- Cadians are now in 12" range so all Necron Warriors start shooting at the IG Platoon - around 30 shots fired, IG are getting slaughtered

Fun part II:
- Necron Lord says "lol" to veterans and assaults Hydra instead
- Hydra gets hit, penetration roll is 5, Hydra is a wreck

Imperial Guard:
- Guardsmen move 6", shoot at Warriors #1, etc...
- The remaining platoon, along with Commissar and his Sergeants assault Warriors #1
- This is deadly as we have 3 power weapons swung at the tin guys and finally Necrons start taking some dire casualties...

Turns 4 & 5:
Don't recall exactly how it all transpired and what of this happened in turn 4 and what in 5, so I'll summarise both:

Necrons:
- Warriors #2 (still 8 of them) slaughtered the Platoon Command Squad located in the crater near the tower
- Lord killed few Veterans with his Warscythe
- Warriors #1 are engaged in malee with Platoon and are doing poorly yet kill some regular grunts and one Sergeant (me thinks ?)

Imperial Guard:
- Lord Commissar shows how to do the Power Fisting, Sergants follow the lead
- this is at the cost of more regular troops as all wounds go to them
- Warriors #1 are finally cut to the last troop (no rolling thanks to the nasty power weapons) but before they do - They take Lord Commissar's last wound thus killing him :]
- Veterans menage to kill the Necron Lord... again.

Turn 6:

Necrons:
- Warrors #2 move into the crater and shoot at the outnumbered Platoon killing more guardsmen now led by last remaining Sergeant
- Necron Lord fails his We'll be back roll and, much to Veteran's joy, goes off the table

Imperial Guard
- remnants of the once strong IG Platoon somehow win all Morale checks up to this point and shoot Warriors #2 with no luck
- they would undoubtedly like to assault them shortly after but they lack range and end their turn

Aftermatch:

Necrons win by ~100pts

We shake hands and I am happy as I won my first game

Since then we played 2 more games (one today) and I scored one more win and a draw, but that's another story

Congrats on the first win with Necrons unbelievably. Man your Lord proved to be the champ of the game by taking out quite a bit on his own.

Thanks! He indeed proved to be useful. I was surprised by mobility and survivability - got to attack vehicle in enemy deployment zone in 2 turns...
Also Warscythe is a mean can opener when it comes to vehicles. 3 attacks, 2d6+6 is almost like guaranteed penetration every time you try
I do crave codex update, but in 500pt bracket I don't find Necrons to be the least competitive army as some say. Or it might just be noob's luck all the way

Great first battle report I doubt I could live up to this and I've been playing for 3 years. Good luck with your necrons

Great game, I love playing some quick(ish) little point matches, changes your prospective on some stuff.

Check out my little ork story I am working on here!

Good report, gratz on your first win. Two things:

1) Where did your friend get those guard models? I don't recognize their backpacks. Also give him my compliments on the painting, very nice.

2) To be fair, his list was rather sub-par. His two squads had conflicting weapons (A heavy weapon and a close combat weapon, don't go together well) and against a MEQ army that can just come back to life against normal weapons, he would have been better off dropping the two infantry squads and replacing them with another Vet+Chimera. In addition, he probably should drop that lascannon and together with the other suggestion, take triple-plas on both of his vet squads or triple-plas/triple-melta, each with their own grouping of weapons.

Sorry for turning this into an army list review for your friend, but this list wasn't really suited to fight necrons. That, of course, doesn't mean that you didn't do an excellent job for your first battle!

An entire society spanning thousands of light years worships a dead guy in a golden throne by killing alien races with genetically mutated supersoldiers dressed in bright blue and gold armor.

And they call religions today stupid.

On the contrary, good advices are always welcome I'll pass the info to him
Since that first game he did some changes. Added Lascannons instead of Autocannons for sure, as that was the thing killing me quite often. I had to change Lord to the one on-foot and take Resurrection Orb to counter that effect. He also dumped chimera to get some points for changes, so I completly ignore Hydra and just go against his troops. Than it's the fight against chance, either I will decimate him in 12" or my We'll be back rolls will score a fail every now and then eventually diminishing my army to Phase out... Orb is also nice to counter the power weapon efficiency Anyway, I'm sending him link to this thread

As for painting - backpacks are custom added, Kromlech accessories, unless I'm wrong. Also his Veteran Squad has it's heads replaced by Gas Mask heads from the same manufacturer as backpacks
Next time we clash I'll get more pics of both armies

Well, hoping that matt ward doesn't write the new codex, and GW doesn't give another xenos army the finger (looking at you, nids) you'll be in for a treat with a codex update.

Ouch - after today... I need a new Codex badly.

As an update to battle report above - Werewolf decided to swap his Lord Commissar and Veteran Squad for Psyker and his psio-whatever team. OH. MY. GOD.
My ass got kicked so badly it hurts to even think about that game... His Psy-guy kept downgrading my LD to 2 so each time he killed 3 Necrons my team was falling back :/
It was not possible to aproach his positions at all nor to come close anough to even shoot that Psyker. Ouch.

But then we played a 2v2 battle where I had Orks by my side (he played along with our fellow Tau player) and due to mess Orks made on the battlefield I only lost 3 Necrons
Orks backed up by my firepower are a really destructive force. Was nice view to see. On my part I took down a squad of Fire Warriors.

Seriously, Necrons need an update :(

Give a lord on foot the veil of darkness, and stick him with a unit of Immortals. That was my fav unit combo when I would play them. Leap frog every turn and and blast the holy hell out of other units. Just learn to judge that 24inch shot they have, other wise youll get assaulted. Pretty devastating when you do it correctly.

Grats on your win though!

Lol that Necron lord was one tough son of a $%^ i have to say i used to 2000 point games that are very competitive but the 500 and 750 point games are always fun! You learn alot about the smaller units that seem cheap and useless but can do alot of damage when feilded properly

Dark Angels 5000 Points
Tyranids 1500 Points
Tau 1500 Points
