They're unlikely to advance the timeline, otherwise they'd feel compelled to change the name of the game, and Warhammer 41K doesn't have the same ring to it.

You mean something even crazier than all the nonsense that's already going on in the 40kverse?

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts forever.
Considering also your duty as a warrior you should not waver. Because there is nothing more auspicious for a warrior than a righteous war.

Might keep the name but advance into 41k. But that would involve change.

As noted on previous similar threads - there are references in BL novels to the 42nd Millenium depending on what you consider canon etc.

Technically, the game is called "Warhammer 40.000", yet the scope of its history is not limited to that single year.
Still, I don't believe they will advance the timeline into the 42nd millennium. They really dug themselves a nice pit there with all the "hype" surrounding the so-called End Times, and between the choice of disappointing one half of the playerbase by any changes going too far and disappointing the other half by any changes not being radical enough, opting to simply remain locked within the 41st millennium likely seems like an attractice "solution" to the studio.

At least according to the Ciaphas Cain novels feth all happens, it just turns over into the 42nd and people go about calling the 41st "the old Millenium" (perhaps a pun on the fact that's its been going on for so damn long). ...At least that is if you count the Third War for Armageddon,Thirteenth Black Crusade and all those nids on the horizon as just another Tuesday.

Hmmm, Year 50,000. By then, the Imperium of Man has collapsed, and chaos has all but obliterated itself, along with most civilizations throughout the galaxy. The Emperor has been reborn, and is focusing on reuniting the shattered world of Terra. Then...wait a minute...

With Chaos, Tzeench would probably turn your hands, feet and face into
scrotums, complete with appropriate nerve endings. Then Khorne would
force you and all your friends to fight to the death using your new
scrotal appendages. Once they get tired of that, you get tossed to
Slaanesh who <censored by order of the Inquisition>, until you finally
end up in Nurgle's clutches and he uses you as a loofah. |
