I am thinking of getting Dead Island and after watching many lets plays I decided to ask Dakkas opinion. SO is Dead Island any good?

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!

but only if you like zombie games that are open world RPG's

it was the perfect game for me

Their ironed out most of the bugs (from what I can tell)

and nothing is better than you and a friend smashing a zombie in the face with a baseball bat simultaneously....

In your base, ignoring your logic.

The major complaint I hear about the game is that when you start to get further into the game it turns into the same missions over and over again and manages to become repetitive. That and if you want to do co-op you both have to be in the same chapter of the game so if you're on the second chapter and your friend is on the fifth, then you have a lot of catching up to do.

I didn't find the missions to be repetitive at all...

It's an awesome game. If you like Condemned and you like Zombies (who dosnt!) then you'll love it. Never underestimate the satisfaction from you get from cleaving up a Zombie with an electrified Machete!

The accusation that all the missions are repetative is pretty much a feature of the type of game this is, an RPG where NPCs give quests to the player that involve getting somewhere, fetching something or escorting someone somewhere...that's most RPGs of this type including stuff like Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

I never thought that the appeal of this kind of game was the nature of the missions, but rather the experience of playing this kind of game in a zombie infested setting the same way that it's not the idea of going to point A and shooting a certain number of creature B that keeps me comming back to Fallout.

All in all Dead Island is a pretty good game that will keep you interested and sometimes make you sweat as you try to outrun the undead. It rewards a player more willing to explore the setting and invest in crafting weapons than just stick to the missions.

My only gripe was the fact that the enemies levelled up with the player all the time. I can accept the need for the zombies to keep pace with the player in the later chapters, but it would have been nice to keep the enemies in the beach resort and city at lower levels so that you could nip back there to restock on money and ammo. Fighting a level 35 thug whenever you nip back to the beach is a pain in the bum.

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of the leveling system. When you start the game on the beach, things seem pretty balanced. Walkers are easier, infected can get in some suprise hits, thugs are pretty tough. However, later on, like when you get into the city, you can sit there and beat on thugs, or even infected and walkers for a loooong time. I mean sure, you can activate rage (i played the drunken quarterback) and kill things pretty quickly, but it just seemed like as the game went on things just required more smacking around to kill, and that's what got so repetitive to me. Early thugs are fun because they can knock you on your arse, but if you can get on their backside, or dodge and weave while landing a few blows here and there, you can kill one pretty quick. However, when one hit takes off less than 5% of their health, it starts to get a bit boring to fight one.

I also wasn't much of a fan of the leveling. Too bad they couldn't just scale the quantity of zombies with your level, then again it would lead to people questioning how so many people were on the island to begin with.

All right, who got sloppy and didn't double tap this thread?

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I would bring this one back from the dead.

I have been looking at this game for a while and wanted to see what else people had to say about the game. I'm looking mainly at the single player and the idea of an open world zombie game makes me all giddy inside.

Thanks for the input.

on the forum. Obviously

Single player is crap. Stupid life system, and absolutely unforgiving towards solo players.

I got this, and even while playing with friends I'm fairly disappointing. It's just not engaging enough for me.

Yeah, it's not the best game out there. Zombie lovers will get a kick out of it, but it's really only ever going to shine with multiplayer.

Wow... apparently I don't know how to type. Should have been "its" not "I'm". Although I'm probably also disappointing in Dead Island.

I personally thought it was a pretty decent game...better in multiplayer, but still fun solo...and yes, it can be VERY unforgiving in single-player.

I liked it quite a bit until I got to the whole zombies scaling up. It was kind of irritating to be able to run over a zombie and kill it in one hit early on and then have to run over a zombie 3 or 4 times later on in the game. I could understand if it was a tank zombie but these were just rotten chicks in bikinis...
