What chess opening do you use and find effective. I only know the Spanish opening; only knowing one means that I am a bit predictable.

Punch the other person in the nose, grab their King, and run away screaming "I win". They almost never see that coming.

Well I was always pretty bad at chess but I found in the last couple of games with this new strategy I've won every game, extremely quickly.
FIrst I intently study my opinion. What is their history? Are they nervous or confident? Are they brash or contemplative? Are they neat of unkept? After reviewing these questions carefully I put a Smith and Wesson no. 29 with 240 grain hollowpoints on the table.

I haven't lost yet.

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

I send the knight on the left out first. Have no idea what anything is called. I'm awful at chess.

I move one of my pawns.

Which one? Ahh, that's part of the secret!

This thread reminds me of this exchange from The West Wing.

Toby moves a pawn (e2-e4).

BARTLET
Taiwan's not gonna be our topic. Ah, the Evans Gambit!

Bartlet moves a pawn (e7-e5).

TOBY
There's no such thing as the Evans Gambit.

BARTLET
A variation of the Giuoco Piano opening, named after a British sea captain, W.D. Evans, who
invented it in 1820 - don't tell me chess moves.

TOBY
I moved my pawn.

BARTLET
Well, it's as popular today as it was back then.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I don't know if this is totally relevant, but it reminds me of an episode of radio-lab where they talked about chess as a part of their segment meant to understand whats so awesome about games.
It was pretty interesting, just follow the link to the episodes page and scroll down to the portion called "the rules can set you free" if you just want to hear that portion of the show.

Again, pretty interesting!

As for me, I haven't played chess regularly in a long while. When I used to play I liked to get my stronger pieces in more accessible positions, so I would move my pawns out of the way of my bishops, or I'd move my knights. I was only a mediocre player though.

I sometimes use the Sokolsky Opening (or Polish Opening) or the Benko Opening (Hungarian Opening), although I tend to prefer the King's Pawn or Queen's Pawn openers, preferring the latter because of the defence offered by the queen to the pawn.

No, I didn't know any of this stuff (apart from the Polish Opening) before deciding to research what my openings are called when I play chess

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
