I have been having a diffucult decision on whether to go for Marines or Orks. I chose Marines because they seem as if they would be easier to piant.

However now I kind of like the challenge and Orks are my favourite race, but I already went ahead and bought £40 worth of Space Marine miniatures.

What do you recommend I do?

Sell your Space Marines and buy the Orks?

It shouldn't be too difficult to find demand for Space Marine models as IIRC they are the most in demand in 40k due to the large number of codecies that use them and the fact that Space Marines are used as the GW poster boys (albeit Ultramarines).

I think I might buy the Assault on Black Reach box and keep the Marines in case I want to paint them (I could always use some as painting practice).

I had an order for something unrelated cancelled because they couldn't find cheap enough shipping so I guess I kind of make my money back.

This is why I always suggest for people to start with the army they are most drawn to. Its always better in the long run.

Anyway, Rampage is right, its pretty easy to exchange your guys.

If you haven't opened the plastic, and still have your receipt, you can probably return them.

Otherwise you can sell them on e bay and get probably around 80cents on the dollar if you are patient, and whether the models are still on spure or not.

Otherwise, start your ork army anyway! Its never *bad* having space marines lying around, you can do anything from skirmish against them with your Orks to practice, or even gift them to a friend you want to get into the hobby.

In any event 40, while a substantial amount of real life cash, is a relatively small fraction of how much an entire army will usually have cost you by the time it is completed. So my advice is start ork now if you are certain that the boyz are for you.

Whoa, GW accepts returns? And here I was just hoping I'd be able to pull off an exchange with something I bought and almost immediately reconsidered.

Buy the orks, then buy some more orks...

Use the marines as scenery, after 10 mins with a razor saw and a pot of red gore...

Just buy the orks?

Having space marines doesn't prevent you from also having Orks. The miniatures won't come to life and start taking eachother apart, though it would be kinda cool if they did.

Besides, after collecting an Ork army, you might also want to have a space marine army, so just think of them as an investment.

I'm gonna go for the Orks.

I was actually thinking of doing a Death Skull army so I might be able to use some Marine gear as they loot a lot. Also the Marine I did get were all off of Ebay.

I have a 5 man Assault Squad (brand new in shrink wrap which I stupidly opened), 7 Tactical Marines all assembled besides weapons (off sprues) and 10 Tactical Marines (on sprues unassembled).

Couldn't find a good deal on the Assaults so they came out at about normal price.

Another option if you cant get rid of them for some reason is to use them for your Orks as trophies and such. Dead marines on bases, hanging from vehicles, marine bits stolen and used on Orks like shoulderpads etc.

If all I'll be using from the Assault on Black Reach is the 20 Ork Boyz (are they shoota or choppa)? Would it be better to buy them individually?

The AoBR boys are all slugga/choppa.

That box also has 3x DeffKoptas with rokkits, 5 nobs (with slugga/choppas), and a warboss. The nobs aren't really kitted out the way I would field nobs. Ever, really. The warboss is decent though.

If you need the small version of the basic rule book, the templates, and the above, it's a good deal. You could split the cost with a friend and give him the marines. Or, you could put the marined in a box along with what you already have in case you want a small space marine army later one.

AOBR boys are all Slugga/Choppa, unfortunately.

If you want shootaboys you'll either have to convert, or go the expensive route any buy boyz boxes/hit up ebay.

YES! Don't buy the black reach just for the boys! They are slugga boys and not nearly as customizable as the regular boys box.

Don't get the battle force box either if you don't plan on using trukks or bikes

Ebay has tons of options for buying boys. Black reach is a good set but if you only want the boys why pay that much for 20 mediocre models.

Yeah. If you must have the boys from AoBR, you can get them on ebay separately.

The only way to get plastic Deffkoptas is from AOBR (or buying someone else'd AOBR ones on ebay etc).

The metal ones are godsawful and spendy.

My army will basically consist of:

Big Mek
Ork Boy Shootas + Nobz
Lootas
Gretchin + Herder
Killa Kans

I have no Idea how much these or their gear costs points wise.

I'd get an ork codex then and read it. Then, make a few lists. Then read the codex again and ask questions here.

Then, when you're happy with your list build/buy to your list.

Welcome to Dakka, by the way.

Don't feel bad, we all make these mistakes. There are three things you can do with them, in my opinion anyways. You can sell them at the local store/ebay/here. You can build them and paint them later, just for the heck of it. Or, you can kit bash with them.

Gathering the Informations.

Don't sell them, first off.

I've seen this quite often on this very forum. A new poster has trouble deciding between one army or another, and constantly flipflops between the two.

This isn't a bad thing. You've got two armies that appeal to you.
You don't have to be restricted by anything other than your income, time, and your means(ex: don't buy models instead of paying your rent, don't paint models instead of doing your homework, etc).

Build the forces up slowly. Start small, and see which one appeals more to you right now. I can almost guarantee you that at a later point, you'll find something that bats you upside the head with a sudden rash of excitement for the other army.

Ebay some AoBR orks maybe? can get them very very cheaply there, seen some for under £20 with postage on there earlier.

Erm, or maybe not, just actually tabbed to the army list, my bad!

AoBR Boyz are Choppa only, their other hand is already assembled to the model.

In your list you put a Big Mek KFF with some Kans. You could also get the AoBR set and convert the SM Dreadnought into a Deff Dread to add some extra heavy support to the list. That will also give you more boyz, Deffkoptaz, nobz and a Warboss to play around with.

Orkses is never defeated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!

Again the Boyz from the AoBR are useless to me. I can't convert them to Shootas and also I have 1 point to spare, hardly enough for a Dread.

Let's look at this from another perspective: £40 is barely getting started in this game.

Consider it a learning experience. Finish assembling those marines and use them to learn a few painting techniques.

Then buy your Orks and build those guys.

However, I highly recommend you get the Ork codex first and read through it before making ANY purchases.

Instead, just proxy those marines as Orks until you figure out what units you need. Then buy those.
