I'm fielding a Librarian with a Jump Pack with 5 Assault Marines (1 Flamer).

I was just wondering if a Bolt pistol or Plasma pistol would be better.

I ask because the Librarian I'm looking at comes with a Plasma pistol.

A plasma pistol is ALWAYS better than a bolt pistol. Nothing like ol' Kharn blowing up a Trukk and slaughtering the contents.

If you don't point out the plasma pistol most people probably won't call out the attention to that. The plasma pistol pretty much guarantees that you can get a kill and soften the assault that is soon coming.

This is pretty much the worst advice ever.

First off, the plasma pistol is worse than the bolt pistol in games where you suffer wounds from gets hot and it has no other effects in the game. Therefore, the first sentence is incorrect. Certainly, an accurate statement would be "a plasma pistol is more likely to cause damage to both infantry and vehicles".

Secondly, plasma pistols cost 15 points. So while they certainly cause more damage, you are paying quite the price for it. I would say you can find much better places to spend 15 points in most lists.

Finally the librarian can take a PSA. If you are going to be using your PSA, the shooting weapon can't be used. This renders the effectiveness comparison irrelevent.

Don't use the plasma pistol if you can avoid it.

If you're running a librarian and you want to take a chance on blowing yourself up, but with a really good payoff, stop muckin about, go for the gold, and take Vortex of Doom. Leave the plasma pistol behind. Chop the arm off at the wrist and attach a bolt pistol.

My Librarian runs Nullzone and Avenger.

don't take a plasma pistol if your taking avenger.

If your close enough to use a plasma pistol, your usually in flamer template range anyway... and even against terminators, i'd rather hit 4-5 of them with a flamer template than maybe hit one with a plasma pistol.

Am I right in thinking you can have both a Psychic attack and a Bolt pistol but you have to choose which one to use on a shooting phase?

Or is it Psychic attack only and no ranged weapon/empty hand.

You can HAVE a ranged weapon and a PSA, but just not shoot with both at the same shooting phase.

I'd go a PSA, especially with avenger on the table.

Yeah, it is. He's saying that given the choice between Avenger and Bolt Pistol you should fire the Avenger. Especially with a flamer in the squad already. Now... if you for some reason don't take Avenger, maybe if you take Null Zone and Gate of Infinity, then you'd choose to fire the bolt pistol.

So yeah... you don't want a plasma pistol on the libby.

One more thing... don't take Vortex of Doom. You won't be able to fire it because it is a Heavy 1.

Also, Plasma Pistols are an utter waste of 15 points. I think people still use them because they used to be able to fire two shots.

I think people use plasma pistols because they used to come on everything. Assault squad? here slap 2 plasma pistols on it.
Special HQ's? Sure, take a plasma pistol.

Every old model I find has an effing plasma pistol on it.

I imagine you bring up the terminator armor because it grants you the relentless special rule, but jump infantry also gives you the relentless rule does it not? So either way you could fire the Heavy 1 PSA and still move/assault anyway.

Plasma Pistol is pretty close range and your not going to get the extra CC attack for it (two different special weapons) so I would just go with a PSA (like Vortex of Doom or Avenger) and Might of the Ancients for CC (upgrade to Epistolary so you can do both)

Being Jump Infantry does not give you relentless. Having a Jet Pack does, I believe, but only the Tau have them.

Also, since all Pistols count as regular CC weapons once you're actually in CC, you do get an extra attack for a Plasma Pistol if you happen to have another one-handed CC weapon, regular or not. They are still a terrible value for the points.

Yea, unless you count forge world, Tau's the only army with Jet Packs.
Plasma Pistol really isnt worth it most of the time. You are paying a lot of points for that one shot.
Infernus pistol and Hand Flamers are a lot better, but you are still better off with the regular version of these weapons.
Really the pistol version of the special weapons shouldnt cost more than it's normal counterpart.
