The only thing wrong with that PC is the graphics card, it's a very low end GPU. It's basically a step up from integrated graphics.

Yea, you can do much better than that for the price, though you'd probably have to get a free copy of windows from somewhere and build it yourself.

Just under $700, yeah. To be fair you'd be hard pressed to find a better pre-built system at that price, especially if it comes with Windows 7. The problem, and it's a big one is the GPU, it's not what I'd consider a gaming GPU, it's far too low end and won't be suitable for him as he wants to play BF3. I just knocked up a build that would cost around £500 with similar parts apart from the GPU which would be a 6850, which actually could handle BF3 on medium at an enjoyable frame rate.

If you want value for money then do one of the following:
Build your own(cheapest option, need high knowledge of computer part/building it)
Use a website such as www.pcspecialist.co. uk or http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/ (slightly more expensive but you still select the parts so some computer knowledge is needed)
Pretty much I went with the 2nd option and wasnt disappointed, though I wish now I had used cyberpower instead of pcspecialist since cyberpower had alot more options.

As I've already told you, the rest of the PC is fine but the GPU is terrible, it won't run any modern game at an enjoyable frame rate/IQ.
Here, I even found you a benchmark showing the sort of performance you'd get with that GPU: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_520/12.html
So no, it won't run Crysis, unless you like playing at 2 - 10fps, depending on resolution. Your friend is the reason Nvidia name their cards how they do.

It is a six-core processor which, from what I can tell, is 2.8ghz per processor. This is perhaps a big excessive for most games, though games like Supreme Commander will certainly use it. 2: Four gigabytes of RAM. About normal fo a Windows 7 computer. 3: Your video card. The GT520 with 1 gigabyte of video RAM is the low-end card of Nvidia's new 500 line of video cards. I don't know how good it is, but as I said, it's the low end of the new series, better than older low-end cards but not necessarily older high-end cards. 4: This is your mother board. I haven't gotten much information on the Asus motherboards... 5: A terabyte hard drive. Quite a lot of storage space. 6: I believe this is a pair of disk drives, one each of DVD-R and DVD- RW-- that is, write-only and re-writable. 7: The case for all of this.

I think there is a markup for having it purchased already assembled and so on. If you had parted it out and assembled it on your own I think you could get it for a fair bit cheaper. Does it come with a display or just the stuff listed there in the case?
The GeForce graphics card to me seems like a significant compromise for the price. I will take a moment when I get a chance to try to price out the cost in parts without labour when I can, but my gut instinct tells me you should be able to get at least a GTX550 or even maybe a GTX560 for that cost if you were to shop around.
Do you have a familiarity with computer assembly? Or an acquaintance who would show enthusiasm towards putting the parts together for you?

IMO if you ever have any competence building anything (AKA Lego ) then you can build a computer (the internet is a godsend)
Yes its annoying if things arrive DOA and you have to constantly check if everything is compatible but the fact that you get what you pay for, which is a lot cheaper than pre builts, is totally worth it. I built my comp 2 years ago and it still can chew on new things like Deus Ex and Shogun 2 (although I am an AMD person so I have zip experience on Intel/Nvidia stuff!)

So while bored and sitting around I did some homework. I went to Tigerdirect.com (priced in USD) and tried to part it out as appropriately as possible.
These are the parts I looked up initially. I tried to match what you said the system would have point for point:
Asus M4A88T-V EVO USB3 Motherboard and AMD Phenom II 1055T Six Core Processor Bundle -$259.99
Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Desktop Memory Module and World of Tanks PC Video Game Bundle -$29.99
Seagate ST31000524AS Barracuda Hard Drive - 1TB, SATA 6Gbps, 7200 RPM, 32MB -$54.99 EDIT: Changed this after the fact. Had a 5900RPM drive, but you would want a 7200RPM one. This added $5. I didn't bother adding it to the totals below so just keep it in mind.
Sony Optiarc SON-AD-7261S-0B 24x DVDRW Drive - DVD±R 24x, DVD-RW 6x, DVD+RW 8x, DVD-R DL 12x, DVD+R9: 12x, DVD-RAM 12x, CD-R 48x, CD-RW 32x SATA, Lightscribe, Black (OEM) -24.99
Cooler Master HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 Mid-Tower Computer Case - ATX, mATX -$59.99
Coolmax M-500B ATX Power Supply - 500W, 120mm Fan (Black) -$29.99
So far totaling at $454.94. At this stage I would want to note that you could probably find a cheaper, albeit less aesthetically appealing, case + power supply unit bundle and save yourself a little bit.
Example of a case that is $64.99 with a 500W power supply that comes with it. This would replace the cost of the above $59.99 case and $29.99 PSU making a total of $429.99.
Xion AXP100-001P ATX Mid-Tower Case - ATX, Micro ATX, 500-Watt Power Supply, 4 x 5.25" Bays, 7 x 3.5" Bays, Dual 120mm Fans -$64.99
And with the video card proposed in the computer system you listed above (with the Cooler Master case you had listed):
EVGA GeForce GT 520 1GB DDR3 PCIe Dual DVI w/HDMI -$54.99 ($5 dollar mail-in rebate no want wants to deal with)
The total is $509.93. I would go ahead and remind you that this is pretty much a budget video card AKA not very powerful.
Alternate affordable video option instead of the previous:
Galaxy 55NGH8HX4NXK GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), HDMI, DVI, VGA, DirectX 11, SLI Ready -$129.99 ($20 dollar mail-in rebate. I never mail these things in...)
Totalling around $584.93. This is a bit more respectable. My roommate can run the BF3 open beta at 1280×720 on high quality at good frame rates when just matching the bare minimum specs for everything except for the fact he has his Geforce GTX560 video card, so a computer with these specifications should kill it. This far exceeds the requirements for The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim as well.

Ehh I wouldnt really recommend that, stock case power supplies arent all that good
Plus the case should always be appealing (I love you antec 1200!)
But I suppose its up to the OP

I have never had a power supply failure even with my generic power supplies.. but more investment and love for your cherished PC can never go wrong, I suppose. We all have our brand loyalty as well. I only ever buy Western Digital HDDs. I have no real data to back up my biases, but I have them none the less.
I always have bought the cheapest/ugliest cases for my new rigs and never cared what people thought about them. It isn't there to look pretty, it is there to make my games look pretty.

Considering the original was in pounds, that's definitely cheaper than the one he was going to buy (which comes out to ~691 USD).
For reference, the 584 price comes out to 378GBP.

If you can assemble a 40K kit, you can assemble your own PC from components and get a better PC for a lot less money. Although this a wargaming forum, I'm still confident we can answer literally any question that might come up in the process. The only tools you'll need are a phillips screwdriver, some thermal grease, a wrist strap, and the ability to read and follow instructions.
For $700USD you can build a kickass gaming computer. I just built my sister a new PC last weekend and I only spent around $450 or so, and it runs current gen games with high settings. This is assuming you already have a monitor, keyboard etc etc.

2 Things : don't skimp on your PSU and secondly buy the best graphics card you can afford. For gaming it's a pretty important consideration. The size of the gfx ram isn't as important (get a 1gB anyway) but it's the speed as well as other factors. Essentially set your budget, get everything else then spend all of the rest on a graphics card.

Getting the "Best" isn't always a good idea. Once you get past mid-upper level graphics cards the price skyrockets and the quality of the card only slightly increases compared to the jump in price.
