Subject: Imperium vs. traitor primarchs

So two questions.
1. Has the imperium, guard or space marines, fought against any of the traitor primarchs in the near past, like long after the HH?
2. And im confused as to how Abbadon became the number 1 chaos baddy to the Imperium. If there are still traitor primarches how did Abbaddon gain like supreme control when Horus died, when he was only a first captain? Why didnt one of the traitor primarches step up and say "Okay, its my turn to burn and kill some sh!t since im the most hardcore mofo chaos has to offer currently"

2. Or they just don't care anymore as they can do whatever they want on their daemon worlds. The only one I can figure wanting to leave, is Angron, and I don't think Angron has the brain capacity anymore to lead everyone...KILL KILL KILL is all he's got so that's why he only leads like minded berserkers. Plus, they gotta be undivided to lead all of the CSM

2: All of the Chaos Primarchs are either dead/banished to the Warp or concerned of matters in the Warp over the Materium (like most Daemon Princes).

Most of the Traitor Primarchs, that are still alive anyway, are either devoted entirely to one god(and as such are not ever going to lead a Chaos Undivided force) or are simply not interested.
Only Primarchs that are undivided would be candidates.
Alpharus/Omegon is a mystery so they are out the window.
Lorgar has locked himself in a tower to "Meditate"
and Perturabo is just chillin in his fortress.
Those are the only Undivided Primarchs there are currently.

Even defeated generals can be awesome. Rommel lost the Afrika Campaign because he was outsupplied, but he is still renowned as one of the best Tank Commanders ever.

Robert, I was going to say something snarky about Rommel and failure, but then I decided not to. Nice avatar.

Daemons have a very tough time leaving the Warp. The more powerful the daemon, the harder it is.
Making the traitor primarchs into daemon princes actually made them less threatening.

Question one seems to have been answered.
In response to question 2 however-
Lets start with the Luna wolves. The Luna Wolves were some of the origional marines to fall to chaos, and basically led the civil war. horus, the master planner of the entire heresy and primarch of the Luna Wolves, is killed at the ending moments and the Luna Wolves retreat. Abbadon, second in command, takes over. Abbadon, said to be a clone of Horus, was Horus's favorite and was an extremely huge guy, as well as an awesome fighter.
So basically the luna wolves (now sons of horus) go back into the warp. Abbadon changes their name yet again to the black legion. However, what makes the black legion different from all of the other legions is that while all the other legions are mostly splitting apart into warbands and basically devolving into chaos, the black legion, under abbadon, remains united, and abbadon thus grows stronger along with his legion.
Another reason abbadon is looked upon as "warmaster of chaos" is because his roots trace back to the origional warmaster, horus.
Correct me if im wrong at any point there.
Feel free to

Also, the daemon primarchs just don't care. Mortarion's not leaving the warp for a while, Angron's happy in his state of constant personal combat, Magnus is too sorcerory to lead a force properly, Fulgrim's disappeared to planet of eternal excess. If they came back, sure, the warbands descended from their legion might rally to them, but most others wouldn't.

Considering Mortarion purposefully placed his Daemon World so that it would be easier to stage assaults on the Imperium, you'd think he would care quite a bit.
And Magnus' only desire is to see the Imperium fall.
Also, IIRC, Lorgar apparently is considering usurping control of the Black Legion from Abaddon.
