How newbie am I? I haven't even got my models in yet. I'm just preparing for my purchases given that I'm trying to ease into this without going bankrupt.

The lists are made from two things, what I've read online about Legion, and what models I like.

25pt

Warlock:
Lylyth

Beasts
Shredder x 4 8pt
Carnivean x1 11pt
Seraph x1 8pt

Solo
Annyssa Ryvaal 4pt

Total 31 - 6 beast points = 25

35 pt

Warlock
eLylyth

Beasts
Carnivean x1 11pt
Seraph x1 8pt
Ravagore x1 10pt

Unit
Raptor x3 6pt

Solo
Annyssa Ryvaal 4pt
Sheperd x1 1pt

Total 40-5 beast points = 35

As I said, I'm mainly going off of what little I know from lots of guide reading, as well as what I like (raptors are my favorite looking unit in the entire game save for Satyxsis Blood Witches)

Am I on the right track, or did I miss how this game works completly?

Your pLylyth list looks good. I run pretty much the same thing at 35 points with two more shredders and a min unit of Raptors and I've been very successful with it.

Your eLylyth list though needs help. The carnivean doesn't go with her to be honest. The "normal" loadout for her is a pair Ravagores and a neph bolt thrower with some deathstalkers thrown in for flavor. She needs to devastate the opponent or win on turn 2 or it's going to go south real quick. The seraph doesn't benefit from her feat that much and the carnivean is a CC beast who can shoot.

Awww, so she's -entirely- ranged.

Could I use the Lylyth instead, replace the herder with a Forsaken due to the extra point, and call it a day?

Swapping back to pLylyth for the 35pt list would clear up the all-ranged focus that eLylyth has and still leave you with a pretty solid list.

awesome!

I was expecting something more along the lines of

"WHY ARE YOU TAKING THAT HORRIBLE SOLO AND RAPTOR UNIT YOU NOOB! GET OUT OF MY HOBBY!"

Dodged a bullet there.

Raptors and especially Annyssa are amazingly good. They are versatle and really can harrass a flank all on their own. With pLylyth's feat they get an extra die to att roles and vs. living they have poison so 3d6 dmg. Not too shabby for murdering infintry and solo hunting. Add prey and the fact that she gives the other raptors a +2 RAT, its good times. They are quick, and don't forget they are light cav, so they get a 5" move after they activate. Hit and run for the win.

Really in Warmachine/Hordes you will not need to worry about that too much. Most units and models are competitive with only a very few models being really poor, and even those tend to have their uses. For example, Kossite woodsmen are super weak and generally not worth their points in a khador list, however they have ambush and can sometimes get a turn 1 or 2 kill against a careless warcaster.

As above, for elylith look into a 2nd ravagore, Deathstalker strider solo's and maybe a bolt thrower.

The only downfall is.. careful if you go against immunity fire things. Ravagores cant shoot them, they will have to smash face.

That's when you pull out your other list that you brought.

Another nice thing about swapping in pLylyth on your 35pt list is that you can upgrade the Shephard to a Forsaken, or take a second Shephard if you'd like since she has another beast point.
