Hello all. I am just starting a new space wolf army and I ran out and secured two wolf pack boxes and a box of devastators. I wanted some advice before building them so I don't realize I made a stupid decision once every one is all glued up, a mistake I made with my IG (plasma sponsons, grenade launchers over melta, mortar HWS), and have to carve painted models up.

Really I have two questions:
How should I equip two squads of grey hunters, and one long fang squad (with what is in the combined boxes)?

How to stretch the wolfy bitz provided to the maximum? Next purchase will likely include either bikers, or assault marines.

If it matters, I'm not at all a competitive player, games are just a fun excuse to day drink with my buddy. He play dark eldar and orks btw.

You can just use your own best judgement on stretching out the wolfy wolf wolfwolf bits.

When equipping squads, generally gear them for one purpose. With a Grey Hunter pack, this would mean giving them 2 plasma guns or 2 melta guns. Unfortunately the wolf pack box only comes with plasma so your options are a bit limited. The Devastator box comes with a sundry mix of heavy weapons, but Long Fangs can split their fire so they can be a bit mixed and shoot at separate targets. 2 lascannons, a missile launcher, and 2 plasma cannons can be good, if expensive. You can fire everything at one target, or let the lascannons and ML shoot vehicles while the plasma cannons take out infantry.

I would recommend purchasing the 5 metal meltagun kit online somewhere so you work meltas into a squad of grey hunters and one to your scouts.

Also, if you plan on giving any squad of grey hunters a power fist, just go ahead and paint him up to be a wolf guard. It's cheaper that way, but you'll have to take the minimum (3) in order to do it.

I also recommend purchasing the metal rune priest model as your HQ as they are a great bonus. That and two rhinos will fill out a 750-1000 pt. list pretty nicely.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I've got one squad of Grey hunters built up. With 2x plasma & 1 Power fist for the Wolf guard. Would you say it is worth it to put the wolf guard in terminator armor?

@nylan I'm torn between the rune priest model and the Njal model (who I would run as a normal rune priest)

The other squad is going to get melta guns (frustrating how melta guns are the best guns in 5ed and they're not included in most kits, had the same issue with IG) I think I'll make some hoodrat melta guns carving up the devastator multi melta

The long fangs are going to have 2x Lascannon and 2x missile launchers.

I generally give my CC grey hunters a flamer and melta, and at least one squad 2 plasmas. If you give the wolf guard termi armor you can't get them into a rhino/razorback.

You should probably just make all your long fangs missile launchers: much cheaper, and only a single point of damage difference. You can get more models out this way. But yes, lots of meltas for troops and rockets for heavies. Good luck. Oh, and have fun with the building. There are tons of bits, and no two guys should look the same. Get gluing!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Melats should be replaced by Plasma guns. GH are troop killers. So rapid firing Plasma guns are the way to go, also have a standard to re roll 1s so you dont lose any to overheating.

As for WG have one with a powerfist but no point in having him in TDA leading GH.
