Black Templars don't suck.
Here are some of mine--> Linky
I find that I have the most fun with Land Raider or Rhino rush. Just get as many guys as you can in as many vehicles as you can and charge straight at the other guy to get into assault. Even against other assault armies like Tyranids.
Doesn't always work. Probably have a 50/50 record with them. Probably not even the best tactic in the world. But I love playing that way.
Also, Helsreach is an excellent book about Reclusiarch Grimaldus.

They're a good army. Just two things you need to ask yourself when assembling your templars, do you want to max your armies potential, or do you want to play fluffy?
Sadly, the templars mostly excel at shooting right now, so if you want to be at all competitive with them, you'll be falling back on units like Land Speeder Typhoons, and Cyclone Missile Launcher Terminators with Tank Hunter.
If you want to play a more fluffy army (Which is more fun imho, if I wanted to play a shooting army, I'd go with a shooting army...) then kronk has it right! Grab those LAnd Raiders and rhinos, load them up with as many guys as you can and shove them down your opponents throat

They have really baller models. Really good looking army. I hate highlighting black though, so I could never bring myself to start them. Guess that's a good thing for my wallet though.
As far as playing goes, always take the vow "Accept any challenge" I think it is. Whichever one gives your army the Preferred Enemy special rule. This makes it so whenever you're in hand to hand combat, you reroll all misses. This vow is absolutely DEADLY when you have a unit of assault Terminators in a land raider with lightning claws and Furious Charge. This means that on the charge your squad of 7 or so Terminators will be getting 28 attacks, hitting at initiative 5 (before most troops in the game) and hitting at strength 5 (wounding most troops on 2's or 3's) ignoring their armor. Of course, since you took that vow they'll be rerolling failed hits, and since they have lightning claws they'll be rerolling failed wounds. An absolutely lethal assault unit.

Black templars dont suck at all, yes they are harder to win with than say..........*cough* OP spacewolfs *cough* but with a good list and a good idea of the game you can run with the best of them. also their fluff......makes me happy all over. they were my first army and they are still my largest army. Just steer clear of their independent characters.....

Space Wolves aren't OP, they just have a few undercosted units that are mostly offset by very expensive ICs. Speaking of expensive ICs, you are right on taking special characters with Black Templars. Helbrecht and Grimaldus are disappointing, to say the least. Marshalls and Chaplains are still awesome though, and the Emperor's Champion is a cool dude.
Black Templars have awesome fluff, and there's also a really good looking but mostly incomprehensible comic book about them from Boom! Studios. It's called Damnation Crusade, check it out. Helsreach is sure to be great - Aaron Dembski-Bowden is the best author Black Library has, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I play foot lists now and then. But two of my friends play eldar and IG. Eldar are extrememly mobil, so I can't catch him. He'll shoot me to death. My IG buddy will pie-plate me to death. After beating my head against that wall too many times, I went to rhino rush and am loving it. When I did foot lists, I'd go with two full 10 initiate and 10 neophyte squad, just to give myself a chance to get one squad into their side of the table. Foot lists have been disappointing for me.
As others have said, you can make a very shooty list, too. A 5 man terminator squad with two cyclone missile launchers and the tank hunter veteran upgrade has been showing up in a lot of my lists lately. Pops open rhinos like crazy and makes the Chaos player think long and hard about where to put his defiler(s). Once in a while, I'll drop down a tank hunting venerable dreadnought with Missile Launcher and Lascannon. That's one twin-Linked S10 and one S9 shot, both at 48", mounted on an AV12 frame. (I stopped using this when playing my Eldar and IG friends. It never survived more that 1 round).
Welcome to the boards, man!

Hey Reaperinks. You're obviously excited about them, man.
1. Do you have the codex? If not, I would buy that next. I advise anyone that wants to get into 40k to read the codex, ask questions (this is a great place), and then make a list. Then, buy models to make that list.
2. By crusade tanks, I'm pretty sure you mean Land Raider Crusaders. The fun thing about templars is that nearly every unit can take a Land Raider crusader as a dedicated transport. However, they are expensive. Having more than one on a list is hard to pull off in armies below 2000 points, but I do like them very much. Remember that your Crusader squads can take Razorbacks at 5 men or less, or Rhinos at 10 men or less. I think our Razorbacks are too expensive, so I mostly use rhinos.
3. Starting small is a good idea, but I refer to you my earlier post. Make your list and buy/build to that list to start. Maybe make a 1000 or 1500 point list to start.
4. Reading through your list, I think you are planning:
5x Assault Terminators
5x Normal Terminators with either Assault Cannons or Cyclone Missile Launchers
10x Initiates (Crusader Squad) What weapons are you thinking?
10x Initiates (Crusader Squad) What weapons are you thinking?
Emperor's Champion (Any list over 750 points is forced to include one).
Solid start. In my opinion, a good basis for an army actually as most of my lists include these units. I'd put the 5 Assault Terminators in a Land Raider or Land Raider Crusader. Alternatively, you can just deepstrike them and leave out the Land Raider. The 10 man squads can go in rhinos. If you leave one as a 9-man squad, you can put the Emperor's Champion in a rhino with them. I'd give the Normal terminators tank hunter and a pair of Cyclone Missile Launchers, but Assault Cannons with Tank Hunters are nothing to ignore, either.
Good luck, man.

Black Templars are a great, fun army. Sadly they're a bit underpowered right now due to the "power creep" of newer armies, but rumour has it the Black Templars are high on Games-Workshop's list of armies they want to redo, so here's hoping.

It doesn't but people like to play that it does.
Fingers crossed that living metal will be crystal clear in the next codex... but what are the odds lol.
And yes, Black Templars are fun as hell! I know people generally hate assault marines... but yours will have preferred enemy for cc and melta bombs for vehicles. Always fun to take once in awhile

Feel free to PM me, but you'll get better responses posting here.
You can get some Black Templar specific tips and hints at the Bolter and Chainsword page for Black Templars. I go there a lot. They also have an Army List Area that I would read through when I first started playing. Over the last few years, I have figured out my own playstyle though, so I don't go there much anymore. But, I would recommend a look through this area and read through why people are bringing certain units.
Also, the codex has a lot of information in it.
Here is a wiki page with a lot of Black Templar information.
Don't worry too much about copying another color. Black Templars don't follow the Codex Astartes too closely. Individual troops may put different decorations on their uniforms. You can't go wrong with Black as the primary color and mix in white, red, silver, and gold. I generally reserve gold for HQ models and veterans.
I've seen a few Templar armies that were primarily red instead of black. Search through the Bolter and Chainsword Hall of Honor or the Dakka Dakka Gallery for different ideas.

One fun little unit that is only 101 points that I drop in when I'm not sure what else to add.
5x Initiates (Crusader squad) with 3 bolters, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun.
Not the greatest unit by any means, but it can sit on an objective and fire 1 S9AP2 shot per round at 48", adds a plasma shot and 3 bolter rounds at 24", and adds a second plasma shot and another 3 bolter rounds at 12".

I would highly recommend that you get the codex before making more guys.
We don't have unit commanders. Are you talking about a Marshal or a Sergeant? We don't get Sergeants. However, a crusader squad can have a Powerfist. And yes, it can also have a flamer or a Plasma Gun.
Bolters are ok, but you're going to want to get chainswords and bolt pistols.
