Hey all, i'm rather new to the game and have fallen rather head over heels for the vostroyans.. but as i keep reading i'm finding that their fluff is a tad restricting, eg carapace armor, doctrines etc.

i guess I'm just wondering if i need to take the fluff to the table or if i can just do more or less as i please.

Rock out with your...fluff...out.

In all seriousness, no one is going to complain if you don't adhere 100 % to the fluff of your army. I play Salamanders, who do not (according to the fluff) generally field Land Speeders or jump troops, but I do both of these things quite a bit. Fluffy? Not really. But there is no rule requiring adherence to fluff.

on the forum. Obviously

You don't have to obey the fluff. One of the joys of the game is to make your own lore and army history.
If the fluff bothers you that much, you could just say that they are a regiment of Vostroyans who don't follow the restrictions.

The Vostroyans are indeed some of the best models GW produce, just bought a box myself. In relation to the OP I doesn't matter. If you're that bothered just invent a new name/colour scheme. Call them the Stalinchrime Grenadiers and paint them dark blue. You can get a better name than the one I made up.

Vostroyans are one of those sad cases where the models are epic but the fluff sucks. Similar to the KoS.

I'm not sure that second idea is such a good one. The Vostroyans are Adeptus Mechanicus relations after all so to find a regiment that does not comply to the overall uniformity would be extremely unlikely, and would probably be branded traitors.

But the first part is good. Consider than every 'fluffy' IG unit is made up of mostly Cadian style infantry. The only thing that seperates you from a wonderful stroy is a new paint job. Get to work!

Do what almost all SM players do, call them The Secondborn and say that their a militia regiment who want to avenge their older brothers

And paint them like a dark grey or black with brass accents to represent their sadness and solid brass balls

Just make up a new regiment that has a similer uniform design.

Koslovian Dragoons: These regiments hail from a planet that is encased in a deadly winter for most of the year with only a few months of warmth. This breeds exceptionally hardened people who think nothing of cold temperatures. Koslovian Dragoon regiments are used as cold weather and city fighting specialists.

Part of this hobby is creativity, MrWind0W. If people are laughing at you for it, there's something wrong with them, not you.

I'm sorry, its not that the fluff is bad its just that the restrictions in the fluff make it less appealing to play with.

Sorry for taking so long. The restrictions mainly being the color scheme and lack of special characters. They are better then Vallhalans but they still pale in comparison to things like Steel Legion or Catachans, but this is just my opinion, think whatever you want.

Valhallens are Russian too.

The Valhallens are WW2 Russians, Vostroyens are WW1/19th century Russians.

Vostroyans are cossacks whereas Valhallans are the red army...
At least, that's where they draw inspiration from.

Of course. The magic of "counts as" makes anything possible. It's how the rules for Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, get applied to Carneus Malgar, Chapter Master of the Pointy Sticks do-it-yourself successor chapter. Or how Lord Castellan Creed becomes Lord Captain Smeed.

You don't have to use a different model.

The way i was thinking of using other regiments special characters was to just paint him his own regimental colors, and say something along the lines of he was appointed to assist in this battle or some crap along those lines.
