Anybody have an idea of what the current Necron background is? I know they're Tomb Kings IN SPACE! now, but I need whatever details (particularly from Fall of Damnos and Hammer and Anvil) exist about their current fluff.

Wait for their new codex next month, all that exist will be overruled by new codex fluff.
But according to rumors, entirely new Necrons will emerge.

For Emperor and Imperium!!!!

Get a copy of the current codex. its actually good and interesting reading.

Yes, it will all change as far as what an "official timeline" might be...but honestly, who cares. Cool stories are still cool.

I also suggest the gw book xenology if you can find it...good stuff.

*sigh* I am really not looking forward to the new Necron fluff, to be honest. Call me simple, but I prefered the 'inexorable killing machine' approach as oppossed to this 'tomb king' stuff.

I'd be inclined to argue the contrary - as things stand, the Necrons really don't have a niche of their own, they're just robot Tyranids devouring all life at the behest of some inferior Chaos Gods.

Yeah...the whole TK in space thing is a bit silly.
They are meant to be the greatest threat to all life in the galaxy, not wannabe Goa'uld.

Who, the Necrons, or the C'tan?

If the C'tan, yes, as the mechanius unknowingly worship one as their machine god. And no, the C'tan are not machines. They are sentient beings of pure energy born in a star.

So far as the background is concerned, killer robots are unoriginal even by Games Workshop's standards, and the Necrons particularly fail to add much of value to a setting in which there are already implacable aliens stripping worlds of all life. The C'tan, however big and bad the fluff strives to make them out to be, are doomed to be of secondary importance to the Chaos Gods - Chaos and the warp are integral not only to the setting's plot, but also to its metaphysics and atmosphere, leaving the C'tan looking exactly like the tacked-on afterthought they were.

The setting would lose very, very little of its depth and interest were the Necrons to go the way of the Squats.

I suggest you read Fall of Damnos then. It really gives the lords some personality, especially the flayed one(can't recall his name at the moment), who basically personifies the insanity niche.

The Necrons aren't merely "killer robots," that's an oversimplification. They are the reanimated corpses of a long-dead civilization who dared to make a pact with dark gods. They share as much in common with the undead as they do your average killer robot.

The Necrons are like the Tyranids in terms of being a mindless, implacable force on the battlefield, who that's true. But they differ in their modus operandi. The Tyranids are very simple in their methods, devour all life on the planet, move to the next one. The Necrons do kill, yes, and they sometimes wipe out all planets of life, also true. But they also harvest, abducting populations for unknown reasons, they also harvest specific glands and organs, before disappearing. They have even been known to take slaves, actually. Always for a purpose. Their enigmatic natures are arguably their most distinguishing feature on the battlefield, they never speak, and unlike the Tyranids they do more beyond "kill" (Though this works for the Tyranids, they are supposed to represent nature in its most extreme, expansionist form, IMO), which enhances that mysterious nature (In-setting, being viewers, we have a more omniscient perspective on the setting).

The Necrons ultimately serve as a less "active" threat than Chaos, the Tyranids, or the Orks, equivelant to a sleeping dragon you try not to awake, and would rather avoid, or preferably destroy before they are completely stirred awake.

Admittedly, the Necrons in some ways represent extreme versions of some of the other factions. While the Eldar (And Dark Eldar are a technologically advanced race, yet now declining due to unknowingly empowering a new, terrible god, and serve as a warning within the setting to the other races of how they could end up if they are not careful, the Necrons serve as a similar warning, they are a long-dead race with technology even greater than that of the Eldar who knowingly empowered and struck a bargain with horrible gods that cost them their souls and their flesh. They are implacable in will and body, like the Tyranids and Orks, but to an even greater degree on a personal level (Generally), and while the Tyranids and Orks are implacable due to their nature, their is genuine malice behind the Necrons. They share a cosmic horror theme with Chaos, but while the Chaos Gods are, well, Chaotic, the Necrons and their masters represent ultimate order, their vision of a galaxy is one without change, where all life exists soulless and hollow and only to serve their limitless hunger. They are ultimately a faction of anti-Chaos. The Necrons have all of us, add a unique aesthetic, and ultimately their methods are fairly unique (Teleporting onto the battlefield at a moment's notice, and wreaking havoc until their goal is achieved with lethal efficiency, be it the abduction of a city, the cleansing of a planet, etc.)

In terms of the C'tan, I fail to really see your point. If being less relevant than the Chaos Gods at the moment was a reason for annulment, then Gork, Mork, Cegorach, Khaine, and the Hive Mind are guilty of this as well. The C'tan are not as active as the Chaos Gods are, but two of them are slumbering, sealed away, and the other two are weakened, and it is not difficult to explain why they are less obviously prominent. Really, the only factions to not have godlike superbeings serving as a sort of "Bigger Bad" for the faction behind the scenes (In the fluff, I personally am against the C'tan being useable on the tabletop myself, because it's idiotic in regards to fluff) are the Dark Eldar and Tau. And honestly, the Deceiver alone has been more active in the fluff than any of said beings short of the Emperor, the Chaos Gods, and the Hive Mind. Then of course there is the fact that the Void Dragon has become prominent in the background of the AdMech, being the inspiration for their Machine God, if not the literal Machine God.

But different strokes for different folks I guess.

I think the Necrons have some of the more interesting personal fluff but on a galactic scale, it wouldn't matter if they went Squats

The same could be said of the Tau or the Dark Eldar. Arguably to an even greater extent really.

That's true of the Tau certainly, but the Dark Eldar have such a strong presence in the fluff that it would be a major thing to have them die off. I'm not saying that the Necrons are less important by any standards, they are just less popular.

I doubt Black Templar's get updated now; with that MMO being made i would expect them to release the BT update in line with the MMOs launch. Since BT will be the chapter in place. But i am a computer guy not business.

Stating as fact that Necrons won't be released a week after halloween with preorders one week before is.
