I'm kinda newish to 40k and like the look of space marines and want a shooty army and i've read that mech is annoying to face so i dont really want to be one of those people.
Here's what a friend suggested for 1000 points

10 Marines with melta and lascannon

How do you think this army would be for me?

You'll want to start again. The list has quite few bad points.

Maybe consider Space wolves as they have the best men with large guns or Black templar.

I guess you have been recommended sternguard and so Kantor.
Sternguard work well in a drop pod. Then are very shooting element. If you want to hold them back I would say give them 2 lascannons in a rhino.
So gun platforms include dreadnoughts, tanks and then devastator squads and thunderfire cannons. I guess you not want the tank option what do you think of cannons and dreads?

With all that high str single target weapons what do you do against horde lists? It would be hard to deal with 50 Orks running at you with a 5+ save. ( KFF )
